Freshman Elli Tufto paced the Bobcats with nine kills, while Joelie Spelts and Camryn Greenwald added seven.
Montana State's serve-receive game started slow, eventually getting on track but it was not enough as Portland State took a 25-17, 25-22, 26-24 decision from the Bobcats on Saturday night in Shroyer Gym.
Montana State (6-7, 1-1) gave up seven points in the first set in its serve-receive. In sets two and three, the Bobcats found themselves down by six-points in both sets before rallying to even each contest in the late going.
At 22-all, Portland State (6-7, 2-0) used three straight points following a time out to take the second frame. In the final set, MSU rallied from a 17-11 deficit rattling off a 13-7 run to tie the contest at 24-all. The Vikings closed out the match on back-to-back blocks.
"We could never get rolling," said MSU head coach Matt Houk. "We would score a few points, do a couple of nice things, then miss a serve, give up an ace, or hit a ball into the middle of the net. We just can't give up that many freebies."
Freshman Elli Tufto paced the Bobcats with nine kills, while Joelie Spelts and Camryn Greenwald added seven. Libero Lauren Lindseth led MSU defensively with 12 digs, while Greenwald guided the Bobcats at the net with five blocks.
For the match, PSU outhit MSU .238 to .128 and held advantages in kills, assists, digs, and blocks.
"In our last two matches against Eastern Washington and Santa Clara, we were quite good at keeping ourselves in each play," Houk said. "We need to start making decisions that we're going to steady out and get off the rollercoaster.
"We did some nice things in the last part of sets two and three and gave ourselves a little bit of a chance in the red zone, but it's the adage of too little, too late," Houk added.
