Scarlet Weidig earns sixth career top-five finish as Montana State places fourth as a team at SUU Pizza Hut Lady Thunderbird
ST. GEORGE, Utah – As has become the theme with this year's Montana State golf team, a strong finish was in the cards as the Bobcats had their best round in their final opportunity Sunday at the SUU Pizza Hut Lady Thunderbird in St. George, Utah.
The Cats carded a 1-under-par 287 to finish fourth as a team, tied for the ninth-best round in program history.
Over the three-day, 54-hole tournament at Sunbrook Golf Club, Montana State shot a 14-over-par 874, the fourth-best tournament score in program history.
"Our mindset was good all three days, and we are seeing improvement each day with all parts of our games," head coach Brittany Basye said. "We still need to work on getting a good start and being confident at the beginning of our rounds. When we can give ourselves opportunities to win events as a team and individually that is great."
The Cats have now recorded a top-four finish in five straight stroke play tournaments dating back to the fall, placing third on three occasions.
Leading the way was Scarlet Weidig, who carded a 4-under-par 68 to leap up the leaderboard and finish tied for third individually.
Weidig climbed 13 spots on the final day, tallying four birdies and an eagle on the way to her round of 68—tied for the 12th best round in school history.
It's the sixth career top-five finish for the native of Belen Heredia, Costa Rica, moving her into a tie for second all-time.
"It's always a good day when players are under par," Basye said. "Scarlet played great and it's good to see her playing her game. It's a good day when a player finishes top-five."
Montana State led the field in the tournament in eagles, tallying four. The next closest team had two.
The Bobcats also asserted themselves on par-5's, with an average stroke of 4.90 on the longer holes—tied with UC Riverside for the best in the tournament field.
Becca Tschetter continued her consistent excellence, carding a 1-under-par 71 on Sunday to tie for tenth overall. The graduate student shot 76-73-71 (220) for her fifth straight top-ten finish as a Bobcat.
Tschetter led the field with two eagles, tallying one on Saturday and another on Sunday.
Hannah Boraas carded a 74 on Sunday after a round of 70 on Saturday to finish tied for 15th at 77-70-74 (221). It's the first top-20 finish of the season for the sophomore from Alexandrai, Minnesota.
Lauren Greeny bounced back from a difficult Saturday with a round of 74 on Sunday, finishing tied for 25th overall with an 8-over-par 224 for the weekend.
