Montana State on island time next week for Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational, competing against stacked field in Lahaina, Maui
BOZEMAN, Mont. -- For the first time in program history, the Montana State women's golf team will compete in the Aloha State, traveling to take part in the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational next week at Royal Ka'anapali Course in Lahaina on the island of Maui.
The three-day, 54-hole tournament hosted by the University of Hawaii begins Monday and continues through Wednesday.
Shotgun starts each morning are scheduled for 8 a.m. HT/12 p.m. MT.
Live scoring for the tournament will be carried on Scoreboard, powered by Clippd.
"This particular tournament is to date one of the toughest fields we have ever competed in as a team, and we are excited for the challenge," head coach Brittany Basye said. "We haven't played in Maui, so this will be our first time seeing this golf course. Playing on Bermuda grass along with the high humidity will be different from what we have seen so far this spring, but we will make adjustments on our practice days."
The 17-team field includes 12 teams that are ranked above the Bobcats in the National Collegiate Golf Ranking System, including No. 49 Oregon State, No. 51 Sacramento State, No. 53 BYU and No. 64 Washington.
Other teams the 134th-ranked Cats will face include Hawaii, Denver, Fresno State, Gonzaga, Sam Houston, UC Riverside, Cal Poly, UC Davis, Mercer, Arkansas State, and Seattle U.
Montana State's lineup will feature Scarlet Weidig, Becca Tschetter, Lauren Greeny, Hannah Boraas, and Maddie Montoya.
The par-72 course is measured at 6,013 yards.
"This will be a great opportunity for us to see how we handle the field, golf course, and our emotions," Bayse said. "We want to keep building on what we did great in St. George, work on what we didn't do so great, and maintain our positive mindset. We want to control what we can control and individually take care of our games which will take care of our team score. This team is ready to rise up for the challenge--full steam ahead."
Montana State will be looking to make a statement coming off their fifth straight top-four team finish at a stroke play tournament, placing fourth at the SUU Pizza Hut Lady Thunderbird in St. George, Utah, on March 9.
Weidig finished third overall individually, shooting a 4-under-par 68 on the final day to finish with a 77-71-68 (216). It marked the sixth career top-five finish for the veteran from Belen Heredia, Costa Rica.
As a team, Montana State closed their stay in Utah with a 1-under-par 287 final round, tied for the ninth-best round in program history.
Over the three-day, 54-hole tournament at Sunbrook Golf Club, Montana State shot a 14-over-par 874, the fourth-best tournament score in program history.
Tschetter continued her stellar season in the Blue and Gold, tying for tenth individually. The graduate transfer from Grand Canyon has now played in four stroke play tournaments for the Bobcats and finished in the top-ten at all of them, including winning the Diane Thomason Invite in Iowa on October 1.
