Montana State places 15th in talent-heavy Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational, shooting 889 to tie for the ninth-best tournament score in school history
LAHAINA, Hawaii – Montana State women's golf wrapped up play at the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational in Lahaina, Hawaii, on Wednesday, finishing 15th after an ultra-competitive 54-hole tournament at Royal Ka'anapali Golf Course on the island of Maui.
The Cats entered the three-day affair ranked 13th among the 17 team stacked teams competing, and held strong against the stiff opposition—sitting seventh after the first day and 12th after the second round before finishing in 15th place on Wednesday with a team score of 25-over par (295-293-301).
Montana State's final total of 889 is tied for the ninth-best tournament team score in program history.
"Obviously it wasn't the finish we were hoping for, but we battled," head coach Brittany Basye said. "This was going to be a tough tournament from the start and you need all three days of good golf to play with these teams We would have two good rounds a day, but we need four to get a competitive team score. It is going to take four scores of great golf each round, even par scores. They all have done it and can do it again. We are going to keep battling and keep playing till the last putt falls."
Lauren Greeny paced the Bobcats with a 26th place finish individually, carding a 1-over par 217 (73-71-73).
Greeny's tournament score of 217 tied for the 15th-best by a Bobcat all-time and tied the junior's fourth-best tournament score of her career.
The native of Pullman, Washington, scattered 13 birdies and an eagle over the three days, continuing her strong season.
The 13 birdies ranked fourth among the 98-player field, and her scoring average of 4.58 on the par 5s throughout the week tied for sixth.
Becca Tschetter had a tougher Wednesday in closing the tournament, but still found room for a highlight with a hole-in-one on the 17th hole, dropping it in from 102 yards out on the par-3 with a 50-degree wedge.
The hole-in-one was the second in the career for Tschetter and the first she had accomplished in tournament play.
Tschetter finished tied for 61st overall, carding a 9-over par 225 (72-75-78).
Scarlet Weidig finished as the No. 2 MSU finisher tying for 46th, carding a 6-over par 222 (72-77-73). The redshirt senior from Belen Heredia, Costa Rica, largely played mistake-free golf, with 32 pars and only two double-bogeys over the 54 holes.
Montana State ranked second among the tournament field in eagles, recording three.
"We definitely had some highlights over the three rounds with birdies, eagles and a hole in one," Basye said.
Unable to practice outside back home, Montana State relished the chance to play in great weather in the program's first tournament held in the Aloha State.
Among the 12 teams ranked ahead of the Cats coming into the tournament were No. 49 Oregon State, No. 51 Sacramento State, No. 53 BYU and No. 64 Washington.
Washington won the team title with a 54-hole tournament score of 19-under par. Sacramento State finished second (-8), and Oregon State finished third (-7).
"What a great place to play some golf and have the opportunity to compete against ranked teams while continuing to prepare for the Big Sky Championships in a few weeks," Basye said.
