MSU coming off of productive practice period
BOZEMAN, Montana – Montana State begins a stretch of seven matches away from Bozeman over 11 days on Sunday, when the Bobcats play Utah State in Logan at 12 noon.
With growth and progress remaining at the top of his to-do list, MSU coach Mateus Ceolin said his team heads onto the road after what he called "a good week of practice. We certainly had some tough moments, but we've talked about our guys rowing in the same direction and (Friday's) practice was awesome in that way. It was maybe the first day that I feel lie we all moved in the same direction. Everyone was present, everyone was working as a team."
In the two weeks since MSU's last competition, Ceolin said the team has focused on details with an eye toward the fundamentals. "Right now it's all about the tactics," he said. "It all goes back to the start, literally, how you start your points and understanding that you don't need to be so fine and expand the court early in points and take risks later."
In a big-picture sense, Ceolin said his athletes continue to work on understanding their own games and building on that knowledge. "We continue to work on structuring our games," he said, "and knowing what each individual's strengths are."
The Cats will need to lean into their strengths on Sunday against the Aggies, a team ranked earlier in the season. Utah State owns a 7-6 record this season, including 4-0 against Big Sky opponents. Mohammad Alkotop leads the Aggies with a 7-2 singles record, split between No. 2 and No. 3.
"Utah State is a good team," Ceolin said. "They're well coached. Aaron (Paahanen) has done a good job with them. They're loud, they're energetic, and it's tough to playing Logan. We're excited and we're looking forward for the challenge. If we play the way we practiced (last week), we and win against anyone."
Live stats and video are available for Sunday's match.
