Fighting Hawks take four of six singles matches to claim victory
BOZEMAN, Montana – Montana State captured the doubles point but North Dakota rallied for wins in four singles matches to capture a 4-3 victory in the Bobcat-Anderson Tennis Center on Sunday.
"We've just got to get better," said MSU coach Mateus Ceolin. "That's two matches now where we win the doubles point and then we lose four singles (matches). We've just got to get better in singles play. You've got to hope that you get at least a split in singles (matches). In all honesty we've got to keep working and get better when it comes to singles play."
The Bobcats have played excellent in tandem through the season's first two weekends, posting a 6-3 record in the three matches. On Sunday, Dmitry Bezborodov and Harrison Janes combined for a 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles, the teams of Eddie Biss and Yassin Elaroussy (at No. 2) and Andre Stewart and Alex Vlahos (No. 3) each picked up 6-4 wins for the doubles point.
The Bobcats dropped points on courts three and four to open singles play before Bezborodov evened the team score at 2-2 with a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles. "Dima played great," Ceolin said. "That translates from his practices, he's been having awesome practices. The guys were joking that the last time he missed a ball was Tuesday, and it's Sunday. Dima is having awesome practices, and it translated to today's match."
Freshman Camille Chantron earned Montana State's other singles win at No. 5. He won in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5. "I'm happy for Camille getting his first college singles win," Ceolin said. "He has a lot of fire, he has a lot of heart. He competed well, fought well, dealt with adversity, and similar to the other guys he has to keep getting better."
The loss drops Montana State to 0-3 on the season, while North Dakot's 3-1 record comes entirely against Big Sky opponents. The Bobcats travel to Spokane, Washington, next weekend to face Whitworth and Gonzaga.
