MSU faces Vandals in matchup of teams with 2-2 league mark...
BOZEMAN, Montana – Montana State faces an important contest in its final regular season road match of the season on Wednesday, when the Bobcat men's tennis team plays at Idaho at 4 pm Wednesday.
The Cats and Vandals each enter Wednesday's contest with a 2-2 Big Sky record, two of seven league teams with either one or two conference losses. Two-and-a-half weeks remain in the league season to sort out the top six teams, who qualify for the Big Sky Championships in Phoenix. Idaho owns wins over Eastern Washington and Montana, with losses to Idaho State and Weber State. MSU's conference wins came against Eastern Washington and Portland State, with losses to Sacramento State and Idaho State.
Junior Francisco Gay leads the Vandals. The returning Second Team All-Big Sky choice owns a 5-0 singles record, all at the top ladder spot. Sophomore Taiyo Kurata, one of the league's top freshmen a season ago, is 4-5 overall but 4-2 at No. 2. Alex Asinov and Sebastian Medica form UI's top doubles squad, with a 4-8 mark at No. 1.
The Bobcats dropped a 5-2 decision to Sacramento State last weekend, but competed well. Freshmen Rayen Hermassi (at No. 3 singles) and Andre Stewart (at No. 4) earned singles wins, and the Bobcats narrowly lost the doubles point. Freshman Dario Ciobotaru (8-8 in singles play) and sophomore Max Relic (6-6) have alternated with each other between No. 1 and No. 2 singles, anchoring a youthful Bobcat lineup. Senior Jacob Huppin, who has battled injury, and grad transfer Andras Necz stand as the only two upperclassmen in the lineup.
After Wednesday's match - which takes place on the Lewis-Clark State Tennis Complex in Lewiston - the Cats host Weber State at 1 pm Sunday as part of a doubleheader with the Bobcat women's team, then finish with home matches against Northern Arizona (April 12) and Montana (April 21).
