“For our seniors, this has been a goal of theirs the past four years,” said second-year head coach Suzie Woodburn.
For the first time since the 2017 season the Montana State women's tennis team is playing a postseason match. The Bobcats earned the No. 4 seed at the Big Sky Conference Tournament and will face No. 5 Weber State on Thursday morning at 9 a.m. (MT) at the Phoenix Tennis Center.
"For our seniors, this has been a goal of theirs the past four years," said second-year head coach Suzie Woodburn. "For the program, this is the expectation we want to set for ourselves year-in and year-out. The team is hungry to make the most of this opportunity. They earned the right to be here with a lot of hard work, and they're ready to go."
Montana State (13-6, 4-4) played all 19 regular season matches indoors. Thursday's contest against the Wildcats will be outdoors with temperatures expected to hover in the low 80s. MSU practiced outdoors Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning in preparation for its match with Weber State (12-9, 4-4).
"There's a lot of adjustments moving from indoors to outdoors," Woodburn said. "But everyone will be in the same boat. We just need to trust our tennis, embrace the elements, stay positive and attack the big moments."
Montana State won its first meeting with Weber State, 7-0, on April 14 in the Bobcat-Anderson Tennis Center. Junior Marta Garcia-Reboredo, a first-team all-Big Sky performer in singles and doubles, will guide one of the league's youngest squads. MSU features four freshmen that have seen significant playing time, including second-team all-conference standouts Paula Dougherty and Meg McCarty, who play at Nos. 2 and 3 singles, respectively. Both players went 5-3 during the Big Sky season.
Hudson Hawkins, in her first season at MSU, combines with Garcia-Reboredo at No. 1 doubles where the tandem notched a league-best 7-1 record. Hawkins, a Las Vegas product, also plays at No. 6 on the singles ladder. She went 5-0 in Big Sky action and has rattled off seven consecutive match wins.
With a Bobcat victory, MSU would face either No. 1 Idaho State or No. 2 Montana on Friday morning in semifinal action. The Big Sky championship match is slated for Saturday at 9 a.m.
