“We had our chances in doubles and to lose that point to a veteran team like Weber State was tough,” said MSU head coach Suzie Woodburn. “Weber State knew how to handle the moment, which gave them confidence, and put us a little behind.”
Weber State used its momentum from an opening doubles point victory to post a 4-0 decision over Montana State in the first round of the Big Sky Conference Tournament on Thursday morning at the Phoenix Tennis Center.
Weber State (13-9) captured the first point as its No. 3 duo of Kenadee Semenik and Jessica Hall fought off two Montana State (13-7) set points to notch a 7-6 (10-8) win over Meg McCarty and Mia Ljubas. McCarty and Ljubas jumped out to an early 2-1 advantage in the tiebreaker, before the Wildcats rattled off three consecutive points. Trailing 5-3, MSU's tandem went on a 3-0 run taking its first set point at 6-5. The Bobcats also held set point at 7-6, before WSU flipped the switch owning set points at 8-7 and 9-8 and getting the victory at 10-8.
"We had our chances in doubles and to lose that point to a veteran team like Weber State was tough," said MSU head coach Suzie Woodburn. "Weber State knew how to handle the moment, which gave them confidence, and put us a little behind."
The deciding doubles point was set up after MSU's No. 2 duo of Andrea Cuquerella and Paula Dougherty defeated Dylan Lolofie and Sicely Ferreira 6-3, and WSU's top pair of Megan Davies and Ana Morett downed Marta Garcia-Reboredo and Hudson Hawkins 6-3.
WSU went ahead 2-0 in singles action as Yangpinan Li recorded a 6-3, 6-2 decision over Cuquerella. Davies followed with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Garcia-Reboredo at the top spot, before Morett, a fifth-year first-team all-Big Sky selection, ended the match at No. 2 with a 7-5, 7-5 victory over Dougherty.
"We fought and competed well," Woodburn said. "But at the end of the day it wasn't enough."
MSU's 13 victories on the season were the most for a Bobcat squad since 2017 when Montana State went 14-6 overall.
"I'm so proud of the team and the growth we had getting better each time we stepped on the court," Woodburn said. "We have a young team that needed to be here and see what it's like. We're sad its over but excited for the future."
