BOZEMAN, Mont. – Montana State women's tennis duo Angel Bean and Nia Gelashvili earned All-Big Sky conference recognitions after leading the Bobcat lineup this spring.
"I am so proud of Angel and Nia for earning All-Big Sky awards," head coach Hailey Barrett said. "This is a testament to all the hard work they have put in this year."
Bean was a first-team all-conference selection after finishing the season with a 11-6 singles record. She went 3-1 in the No. 2 spot and 8-6 at No. 3, concluding the regular season with a three-game winning streak. The junior captain of the MSU squad collected six conference wins, including three at No. 2 singles and helped the team advance to the Big Sky Women's Tennis Championship for the third consecutive season.
She was named the Big Sky Conference Player of the Week in January after leading the Bobcats to a 2-0 start to the dual match season. She went undefeated in each of her matches that week, earning a pair of singles and doubles wins over Marquette and North Dakota.
"Angel has been such a steady presence in the singles lineup all year," Barrett said. "We can always count on her to go out there and compete with passion and grit."
As the regular pair at No. 2 doubles, Bean and Gelashvili earned second team all-conference recognition. The team compiled a 11-3 record with nine straight wins to wrap up the year. The Bobcats won the doubles point 11 times during the season, with Bean and Gelashvili picking up seven wins over conference opponents.
"Angel and Nia have been so solid in our doubles lineup," Barrett said. "Earning the doubles point is a big advantage in a match, and they have been a big reason why we've been able to do that so often this year. I can't wait to see what each of them do in Phoenix this week."
Montana State opens play at the Big Sky tournament on Thursday, with Bean and Gelashvili the only two members of the lineup returning from last season's postseason appearance.
