Montana State captures another Brawl of the Wild point to lead 12-1
BOZEMAN, Mont. (April 11, 2026) – Angel Bean grinded out a three-set, 90-minute long win at No. 2 singles to seal Montana State's 6-1 women's tennis win over Montana in the Bobcat-Anderson Tennis Center on Saturday.
"You can never count her out," Bobcat head coach Hailey Barrett said of Bean's win, which was emblematic of the team's effort. Montana captured the first doubles match, a 6-1 win by Meghna Anand and Kelsey Phillips over Terezie Stverakova and Anna Wise. From that point on, there was no counting out the Bobcats.
First, MSU wrapped up the doubles point. Angel Bean and Nia Gelashvili took a narrow 6-4 win over Paige Bott and Kaylin Kielty on court two. Then, Lola Bean and Kavya Khirwar grabbed a dramatic 7-5 win at No. 3 to clinch the doubles point.
"That was huge," Barrett said of MSU's come-from-behind effort in doubles play. "I really was. To continuously have these tight doubles points, and just play good, solid doubles when we need to is so important."
Singles play began as doubles play ended. The Bobcats rolled at No. 4, where Stverekova dispatched Slovakova 6-2, 6-0, and not long after Gelashvili handled Prichard 6-3, 6-1. UM earned its only singles win on court one, where Phillips topped Wise. But that proved to be academic when Angel Bean outlasted Anand 6-7 (7-3 in the tie-breaker), 6-1, 6-1.
"Angel always battles, no matter what," Barrett said. "That's just a testament to all her hard work. And it's contagious. I think the rest of the team feels that and it helps us through big moments."
After Angel Bean's big moment, Lola Bean took a 6-1, 6-1 win over Shivika Agrawal, then MSU's Kavya Khirwar finished the day's proceedings with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Kaylin Kielty. "The Griz, that's a tough team," Barrett said. "They certainly put up a fight and we did what we needed to do in the big moments and trusted all the hard work we've put in."
Montana State raised its record to 7-10 with the win, 3-4 in Big Sky play. UM is 2-15, 0-7. The Bobcats close the regular season next Sunday, April 19, hosting Weber State in the Bobcat-Anderson Tennis Center.
