The Big Sky power Lumberjacks arrive in Bozeman one-half game out of the league lead
BOZEMAN, Montana – Battling for a berth in the Big Sky Men's Tennis Tournament, Montana State hosts league power Northern Arizona on Friday morning at 10 am in the Bobcat-Anderson Tennis Center.
The reigning Big Sky regular season champion who has won two of the four most recent conference tournaments, NAU enters weekend play with a 4-1 conference record. The Lumberjacks stand one-half game behind league-leading Sacramento State, with a win over the Hornets, and are 13-6 overall. Northern Arizona finishes the regular season with a Sunday match in Missoula before hosting Idaho on April 20. The Vandals topped NAU in the league championship match a year ago.
Dani Torres led the Lumberjacks to home wins against Eastern Washington and Idaho State last weekend, winning all four of his matches to pick up Big Sky Player of the Week honors. His doubles win with Maciej Bogusz clinched that point and proved pivotal in the team win. Torres is 11-3 in singles on the season, 12-5 in doubles play, while Maikel De Boes is 5-0 in Big Sky matches and rides a six-match win streak overall. He is 10-2 at No. 3 singles.
The Cats are 8-10 overall, and at 3-3 in Big Sky play are deadlocked with Idaho and Idaho State for the final two spots in the six-team conference tournament (April 25-27 in Phoenix). Dario Ciobotaru 10-8 record in singles play, split between the top two ladder spots, sets the pace for the team. Kanika Jayathilake owns an 8-5 record split between the bottom two ladder spots.
After Friday's match (which is available to follow on live stats), the Cats close the regular season against Montana on Sunday, April 21, at 11 am in the Bobcat-Anderson Tennis Center.
