Cats look to remain among Big Sky leaders
BOZEMAN, Montana – Montana State plays at home for the first time in over 60 days on Saturday, hosting Sacramento State in a Big Sky Conference contest that holds considerable bearing in the race toward the league's six post-season tournament spots.
The Cats enter weekend action 7-8 overall, 2-1 in Big Sky play after last weekend's loss at Idaho State. Sac State stands 11-5, 3-1 in the league, after Thursday's 5-2 win at Montana. The Hornets also topped Weber State and Idaho State, but dropped a 4-3 decision to Northern Arizona.
A pair of freshman and a grad student lead the Bobcats in wins. Dario Ciobotaru's eight wins sets the standard for the Bobcats, with the frosh playing primarily at No. 2 singles. Graduate Andras Necz owns a 7-5 mark, with most of those playing on the third court, while freshman Kanika Jayathilake is 7-3 at the bottom ladder spots.
Two-time Big Sky Men's Player of the Week Mark Keki leads the way for Sacramento State. The senior owns a 10-2 singles record, all compiled at No. 1, and is 9-2 in doubles play. Sophomore Adam Chodur is 11-2 in singles play, spread out of the middle ladder positions. Each of the nine Hornets to see the court this spring own a record of at least .500.
The Bobcats enter weekend play one of six Big Sky teams with only one conference loss. NAU (2-0) plays at Weber State (1-1) on Sunday, while Idaho State (3-1) and Idaho (2-1) round out that list. The Bobcats play at Idaho on Wednesday before finishing with home matches against Weber State on April 7, NAU on April 12, and Montana on April 21.
