6-1 decision features several close individual contests
Portland took the doubles point by the narrowest margin and then captured three of the first four singles matches completed to beat Montana State 6-1 in men's tennis Sunday at Portland, Oregon.
Andras Necz and Max Relic won at court one in the first singles match completed, taking a 6-4 decision, but just minutes later Portland finished off a 7-5 decision against Rayen Hermassi and Andre Stewart. That set the stage for the Pilots' 7-6 (10-8) win at No. 3 against Dario Ciobotaru and Kanika Jayathilake.
With the doubles point secured, UP took a 2-0 lead in quick fashion when Oscar Brown beat Relic 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 singles. On court two, Portland's Nicolas Ocana took a hard-fought 6-3, 6-7, 6-2 win. Necz got the Bobcats on the board with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 win at No. 3. The Pilots finished he match with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-0 win over Rayen Hermassi at No. 4 singles. The other two matches went unfinished.
"Today's match was a tough fight on most courts," MSU head coach Rob Bareford said. "We had more match points again at three doubles that we couldn't close, then several opportunities throughout singles that we couldn't capitalize on. All in all we got better today and closer to our goals for post-season play."
The Bobcats' next match is Saturday, March 2, at Eastern Washington.
