Montana State senior tennis standout Jazmin Lerman captured the gold medal in doubles play as well as bronze medals in singles and mixed doubles at the 15th Pan American Maccabi Games in her hometown of Buenos Aires, Argentina, Dec. 27 – Jan. 5.
Every four years, the Maccabi World Union organizes the Pan American Maccabi Games held in South America, which gathers Jewish delegations from the continent and other invited countries. Over 4,000 athletes competed last week.
"I have known that the Pan American Maccabiah Games were going to be played in my home country for years," Lerman said. "Ever since my freshman in college, I have dreamed of becoming a strong player that would have a good performance in this event."
Lerman, who has played in the middle of the Montana State ladder the past three years, combined with Sol Rabin, where the tandem dispatched Gavriella Smith and Ruby Wool of the United States 7-5, 6-3 to capture the gold medal.
"I went back to Argentina after having a great fall season and I had my hopes up for this tournament," Lerman stated. "I competed to the best of my efforts to represent my country and my school. I would warm up listening to our matchday playlist and remember our goals for the season when things got hard in the matches."
Lerman also won two bronze medals, one in singles and one in mixed doubles. Lerman downed Ellior Rose of the U.S. 6-1, 6-1; and teamed with Ariel Farji to defeat Rose and Eli Nickoll 9-3.
"Now, I come back to school after accomplishing a dream, receiving medals in all three categories that are played in a tournament that is so important for myself, my family, and my community," Lerman added. "I have high confidence in my tennis and an incredible excitement for what is coming for the MSU women's tennis team."
The Bobcats open their 2024 season hosting North Dakota, Friday, 9 a.m., and Seattle U, Sunday, 9 a.m. in the Bobcat-Anderson Tennis Center. Lerman, a team captain, will see action in both singles and doubles play this weekend.
"It was a special experience for Jazmin to represent Argentina in her home country and community," said MSU head coach Suzie Woodburn. "She played in a ton of matches and had immense success. We are so proud of her, and we look forward to her leading and helping the team this spring."
Woodburn returns five players from last season's squad, including No. 1 singles standout Marta Garcia-Reboredo. Woodburn also welcomes four freshmen, including Angel Bean, Paula Dougherty, Hudson Hawkins, and Bozeman High product Meg McCarty.
"The team feels confident and is ready to go the season started," Woodburn said. "We're excited to being opening the season at home. This team worked hard during the fall and over the break and we're eager to see that translated into match play."
