“It’s going to take all ten of us every match this entire season to find success,” said MSU second-year head coach Suzie Woodburn.
After dropping the opening doubles point, Montana State captured four of six singles matches to post a 4-3 win over North Dakota in the season opener for both squads on Friday morning in the Bobcat-Anderson Tennis Center.
Montana State (1-0) opened the match winning No. 3 doubles as Andrea Cuquerella and Meg McCarty combined for a 6-2 win over North Dakota's (0-1) Aziza Aubin and Nyah Kauders. UND took Nos. 1 and 2 doubles to earn the first point of the match.
McCarty, a freshman from Bozeman, put the Bobcats on the scoreboard, winning the first singles match of the contest with a straight set 7-5, 6-1 decision over Sapir Sela. Veteran standout Marta Garcia-Reboredo followed at the top spot defeating Kauders 6-2, 6-2, giving MSU its first lead.
"It's going to take all ten of us every match this entire season to find success," said MSU second-year head coach Suzie Woodburn. "To start the season with a tough win is what we needed. Every match was super competitive, and it took teammates cheering each other on and really playing to win in the big moments."
Freshman Angel Bean put the Bobcats up 3-1 with a hard fought 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 decision over Andrea Jansson at No. 3 singles. Cuquerella clinched the match for MSU with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Aubin at No. 6 singles.
"The first match everyone had nerves," Woodburn said. "The freshmen played through the nerves and trusted in themselves and for them to get some wins was huge for their confidence.
"Andrea is a veteran that's been injured for two years and for her to come back healthy for the first time in her college experience and get wins in doubles and singles is amazing," Woodburn added. "She's a captain for our team and has been giving us everything she has, and it was fun to see her get the clinch."
North Dakota closed out the scoring winning at Nos. 4 and 5 singles.
