NEXT UP:
Montana State plays for its first ever Big Sky Conference title when it faces Weber State on Friday at 7 p.m. at Bank of Colorado Arena in Greeley. It will also mark the first time the Bobcats have played in a Big Sky Conference tournament championship match in the 36-year history of the league. Women's sports started play in the Big Sky Conference in the fall of 1988. Prior to that the Bobcats played in the original Mountain West Athletic Conference - a separate women's league- from 1982-87 under the leadership of commissioner Sharon Holmberg. MSU played for the MWAC title in 1983 where it fell 17-15, 12-15, 15-10, 15-8 to Portland State in the Rose City.
ON A ROLL:
Montana State, with its 3-1 victory over Eastern Washington on Thursday night, has won seven matches in a row, including victories over Sacramento State, Weber State, Portland State, Montana, Eastern Washington, Idaho State, and Northern Arizona. The win streak is MSU's longest since the 2021 Bobcats won nine straight during the Spring Covid season.
TWENTY-ONE:
Montana State has won 21 matches following its win over Eastern Washington. The 21 wins are the most for the Bobcats since Dave Gantt's squad went 21-10 during the 2002 season. MSU's 12 Big Sky Conference victories this season are the most for a Montana State team in Big Sky play.
SIMPLY THE BEST:
Kira Thomsen's first kill against Northern Colorado Nov. 2 was a hard swing that deflected off the block out-of-bounds. It gave the Parker, Colo., product 1,452 career kills and the all-time MSU career kills record, moving her ahead of Diane Terrall who had held the record since 1981. Thomsen's current total stands at 1,598 career kills, which ranks 8th in the league record books and 5th in the Big Sky Conference era. Thomsen has also registered a career 4,590 attacks, which ranks sixth all-time and fifth in Big Sky history. Her 145 career aces also rank in the top 20 in Big Sky history. Thomsen is a three-time First Team All-Big Sky pick and was a Second Team All-Big Sky choice in the fall of 2021. Off the court, she will become a rare five-time All-Big Sky Conference Academic honoree.
FRIDAY CATURDAY:
Montana State and Weber State will meet for the second time this season. The Bobcats played Weber State and Eastern Washington just once during the regular season. The Bobcats notched a reverse sweep over WSU on Nov. 11 in Ogden, winning 20-25, 19-25, 25-18, 25-9, 15-12. It was MSU's third straight win over the Wildcats, all in Swenson Gym. The Bobcats were paced in the win by Kira Thomsen and Jourdain Kamps with 20 and 18 kills, respectively, while Dani Richins recorded 19 kills, 18 digs, and three blocks for WSU.
