Montana State Men's Tennis Team Hosts Two Matches Saturday

Cats face Whitman at 10 am, Whitworth at 3 pm
BOZEMAN, Montana – February 10, 2021 – Montana State plays its final home matches until late March on Saturday when the Bobcats host Whitman College at 10 am and Whitworth University at 3 pm in the Bobcat-Anderson Tennis Center.
After taking a break from competition last week, the Cats host Saturday's matches before encountering 11 matches away from home in a 27-day span. That sets up this weekend's matches as an opportunity for MSU to both work its way back into competition and springboard into a crucial stretch of the team's schedule, Bobcat coach Trey Morris said.
"First and foremost we want to compete well as a team," Morris said. "We used last week to improve as individuals so I want to see that work translate into competition. But I also want to get as many different players into matches as possible because we're entering an intense stretch and we'll need to rely on our quality depth."
Montana State has won five of its six matches this spring and enters weekend play boasting four different individuals with at least four singles wins. Sophomore Daan Van Dijk stands 5-1 as the team's No. 2 singles player, while Jamieson Nathan (4-0 at No. 3), Brad Buckland (4-1 overall, 3-1 at No. 4) and Joaquin Espinoza (1-1 at No. 5, 3-0 at No. 6) each boast stellar singles records.
Additionally, Matej Panik stands 3-3 in his role as the team's No. 1 singles player, a solid mark at the top ladder spot, while Nejc Sitar is 3-0 playing at No. 5. The balance and depth, Morris said, stands as a team hallmark.
"This group is very competitive," Morris said, "especially within the team. That competition builds depth, but it also makes it important for us to get as many players opportunities in matches as we can."
Whitworth is 1-2 this season, with a win over Community Colleges of Spokane and a 6-1 loss to Eastern Washington standing aside Montana State's 7-0 win on January 22. Whitman, like Whitworth a member of the Division III Northwest Conference, begins its spring season with matches at Montana and against Lewis-Clark State in Missoula on Friday.
