Bobcat Men's Tennis Team Splits Friday Matches in Colorado

MSU tops Metro State before falling to Air Force
The results were mixed but the effort wasn't, as the Montana State men's tennis team spilt a pair of matches in the Denver area on Friday.
The Cats dropped the doubles point but won four of the six singles matches to capture a 4-3 road win against top-tier Division II opponent Metro State in the morning. Air Force jumped in front by winning the doubles point in the evening match at Parker, Colorado, then swept the first three singles matches to clinch the win. MSU , the dropped the doubles decision while splitting the singles contests in a 4-3 loss to Air Force in the evening. The Bobcats rallied with three straight wins to close the competition.
The morning match was a dramatic, come-from-behind affair. Metro State jumped out to a 3-1 lead, answering Chase Stoner's win at No. 5 singles with wins at No. 1 and No. 6. Facing a team loss, Christian Damgaard-Qvist earned a 6-4, 7-6 win at No. 4, and Bozeman High product Marcos Zelver responded with a 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 3. With the match in the balance, Joaquin Espinoza's 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 win gave MSU the team victory.
"Today we showed what type of character, grit and fight we have as a team," Morris said of the Metro State win. "After losing the doubles point we have as a team. After losing the doubles point we kept fighting all across the board and found a way to come back against a good Metro State team."
MSU again dropped the doubles decision against Air Force, and this time that loss was too much to overcome. Singles losses at No. 5, No. 3, and No. 4 clinched the Falcons' victory. Espinoza began the late rally with a 7-6, 6-2 win at No. 2, Manuel Monteiro won 6-4, 7-6 at No. 6, and Nejc Sitar earned a hard fought 7-5, 7-6, 10-4 win to finish the match.
"Air Force came out strong but we fought back hard," Morris said. "Unfortunately we fell just short. However, credit goes out to the guys for showing amazing grit and determination once again."
The Bobcats finish their three-match road trip on Saturday afternoon at CSU-Pueblo.
