The Bobcats compete in their final regular indoor season meet ahead of the Big Sky Championships
BOZEMAN, Mont. – Montana State is gearing up for its final home meet of the indoor track and field season as the Bobcats get set to host the Big Sky Tuner on Friday, Feb. 21, inside of Worthington Arena. Field events open competition at 10 a.m. while running events start at approximately 11 a.m.
The Bobcats are coming off a weekend which saw more than 30 of their athletes participate in either New Mexico's Don Kirby Elite Invitational or Washington's Husky Classic. Both meets featured athletes from across the country.
"It was really a great experience for our student-athletes competing in national-level meets up against some incredible individuals and teams," said Lyle Weese, Montana State's director of track and field.
The Big Sky Conference Indoor Championships begin next week inside of Idaho State's Holt Arena. Several Bobcats will be vying for their final opportunities to make MSU's travel roster that will appear at the meet. MSU's men's squad features 13 athletes that currently hold spots on the Big Sky performance list that would garner points at the conference championships. The Bobcat women's team has 11 performers that have at least one top-eight mark or time on the Big Sky charts.
Both squads are allowed to bring 26 athletes apiece to the conference meet.
"We are really starting to wind down a little bit," Weese said of MSU's preparations for the championships. "Most of our workouts throughout all the event groups are starting to back off a little bit. We're starting to prepare for our last home meet this weekend then the conference championships around nine days from now."
The Bobcat men's team has a total of 44 top 20 marks or times, while the women's squad has 32, on the Big Sky performance list.
Drake Schneider holds the second fastest 400-meter and third fastest 200-meter times in the Big Sky this season. Among the men's contingent that has marks that would currently place them on the conference podium include Will Prettyman (200), Cameron Carroll (800), Noah Majerus (800), Noah Martin (high jump), Wyatt Thompson-Siporen (pole vault) and Caleb Neth (heptathlon).
Lucy Corbett currently paces the MSU women's team by sitting atop the Big Sky's high jump list. Morgan Evans (60 hurdles) also has a podium mark currently, while McKenna Ramsay holds the fourth-fastest time in the 800 and sixth best mark in the 400.
"Definitely it's been building throughout the season," Weese said of MSU's anticipation for the indoor championships. "As we come into our last home meet and last chance before the Big Sky Championships, the intensity is continuing to go up and people are starting to get ready to compete well at the conference championships."
Montana State welcomes Carroll College, Idaho State, Montana, Montana Western and Southern Idaho to the Brick Breeden Fieldhouse for Friday's meet. Fans can enjoy the meet with free admission, but parking in MSU lots will be monitored with customary weekday parking regulations on campus. Live results can be followed along with throughout the event at msubobcats.com/trackresults.
