Northern Colorado handed Montana State its first Big Sky Conference road loss of the season defeating the Bobcats 25-22, 25-21, 25-17 on Saturday in Bank of Colorado Arena.
Montana State (5-6, 1-1) fought with Northern Colorado (8-6, 2-0) for much of the opening stanza before the Bears pulled away down the stretch. Northern Colorado held a slim .273 to .267 hitting advantage.
"Northern Colorado executed at a really high level and we matched that execution for stretches, but not long enough," said MSU head coach Daniel Jones. "The next step for Bobcat volleyball is to be able to execute throughout a set and control our side of the net."
The second frame featured eight ties and five lead changes, before UNC, behind its .371 attack mark, broke away from a 19-18 deficit with a 7-2 run to take a 2-0 advantage heading into intermission.
The third set saw five ties and four lead changes in the early going before the Bears flexed its muscle out-hitting the Bobcats .250 to .033 to cruise to the win.
"We were taught a very valuable lesson," Jones commented. "We'll watch the film and get back into the gym and make the improvements we need to make," Jones added.
Montana State was led by Evi Wilson with 14 kills and a .235 attack mark, while Hannah Scott posted seven kills and seven digs, while hitting .263 from the field. Defensively, Allyssa Rizzo registered nine digs, while Scott and Emma Pence each posted three blocks. Junior setter Allie Lynch finished with 24 assists and seven digs.
Northern Colorado was paced by Kailey Jo Ince with 17 kills.
MSU will host Idaho on Thursday night in Shroyer Gym.
