BOZEMAN, Mont. – The Montana State women's tennis team will have its hands full when it hosts Tulsa, Sunday, Feb. 24 at 10 a.m. in the Bobcat-Anderson Tennis Center.
Tulsa finished the 2017-18 season ranked No. 19 in the nation after posting a 23-6 overall mark, winning the American Athletic Conference title, and making its 12th straight NCAA Championship appearance under the direction of head coach Dean Orford.
"We're excited to have a team of their quality come to Bozeman and play us," said MSU head coach Jon Reeves. "This will be a great opportunity for us to experience a high level of tennis."
The Bobcats are coming off a 2-1 road trip in Portland, Ore., last weekend. MSU's play was highlighted with a 5-2 victory over Portland State for its first Big Sky Conference win of the season. The top of the Bobcat ladder – Annie Walker, Laura Mary, and Linnea Fristam – all posted wins in singles action.
Walker, a sophomore from Las Vegas, finished the weekend 2-1 in singles play and 3-0 in doubles action combined with Sarah Cheverie. Walker moved up to the No. 1 spot in singles and went 1-1. In doubles, Cheverie and Walker remained undefeated with a 5-0 mark.
"Annie brings so much energy, which is a positive thing for us," Reeves said. "We needed to give Laura (Mary) a break at the No. 1 spot, and Annie stepped-up to the challenge. We've been nicked up with injury and are playing with just six kids, but they have accepted the adversity and are much more focused. We're in a good spot mentally, right now."
Tulsa features the one-two punch of Martina Okalova and Martha Matoula at the Nos. 1 and 2 singles spots on the ladder. Matoula, who plays at No. 2 is coming off a win over 50th-ranked Janet Koch of Kansas, last week. The Hurricanes' top doubles pairing of Okalova and Vera Ploner are currently ranked No. 7 in the country. As a team, Tulsa is 7-5 overall with four of its losses to teams ranked in the Top 25.
The Bobcats are currently 3-5 overall led by Walker and Enni Zander with identical 4-4 records in singles play.
The match against Tulsa is free and open to the public.
