No. 46-ranked Tulsa handed the Montana State women’s tennis team a 7-0 setback on Sunday afternoon in the Bobcat-Anderson Tennis Center.
BOZEMAN, Mont. – No. 46-ranked Tulsa handed the Montana State women's tennis team a 7-0 setback on Sunday afternoon in the Bobcat-Anderson Tennis Center. The Hurricanes, who finished last season ranked No. 19 in the nation, flexed its muscle on Sunday winning all six singles matches in straight sets.
Tulsa (9-5) opened the match winning the double point at Nos. 2 and 3. The No. 1 doubles match was knotted at 3-3 before being called. MSU's top tandem of Laura Mary and Linnea Fristam went shot-for-shot with Tulsa's top pairing of Vera Ploner and Shura Poppe.
"I was very pleased with how No. 1 doubles was competing in their match," said MSU head coach Jon Reeves. "They had great energy and belief in their ability to win."
The Hurricane's opened singles play as Megan Hopton earned a 6-4, 6-1 decision over Enni Zander at the No. 4 spot. Tulsa clinched the match at No. 1 singles where Martha Matoula downed Annie Walker 6-3, 6-2.
"One of the biggest things we've been talking about is understanding the higher the level gets it's the little choices and decisions, whether it be preparation or executing in a point, that creates a different level," Reeves commented. "Teams like Tulsa are better at it, and they have more confidence in their game. We had opportunities where if we execute we could've created some interesting scenarios, but unfortunately we didn't step up to those.
"I thought Annie Walker was really bringing some enthusiasm today," Reeves continued. "She's doing a really good job at bringing energy to the No. 1 spot. She played some great points, but she needs to start stringing points together to get to another level."
Montana State will travel to Casper to face Wyoming, Friday, March 1 at 5 p.m.
