MSU looks for precious league win
The Montana State men's tennis team takes a quick swing through the Great Northwest beginning Sunday, when the Cats face Portland State in a Big Sky Conference match which begins at 10 am MT.
The Cats and PSU each near the mid-point of their conference season fighting for entry into the Big Sky Conference Tournament. MSU stands 2-1 in league play, while the Vikings hunt for their first league win against four losses. The league tourney at the end of April is in Phoenix.
Bobcat coach Jared Burnham expects a top-shelf performance from Portland State on Sunday. "Portland State is improving," he said, "and they're a different team at home. They are very tough on their own courts."
The Bobcats have lost four of their last five matches, and only in the first of those, at BYU, did MSU win a singles match. Conversely, Montana State's success in doubles play has escalated in recent weeks. Burnham said getting untracked in singles play is high on his agenda for the week, which also includes a Tuesday match at the University of Portland.
"It's hard to explain it," Burnham said of his team's singles slump, indicating his team's lineup may change in an attempt to snap his team out of it. "We're working hard to get going in the right direction."
