“I am happy with how our team finished off their first long weekend of dual match play,” said MSU head coach Jon Reeves. “Three matches in three days in three different cities are always tough. They handled it brilliantly."
The Montana State women's tennis team rebounded from its loss to Washington State on Saturday with a convincing 5-2 victory over Seattle U, Sunday afternoon. MSU completed its Pacific Northwest road trip with a 2-1 record to open the season.
The Bobcats opened play against Seattle U winning all three doubles matches to earn the first point of the contest. MSU's doubles play was highlighted by a win at the top spot as Laura Middel and Naomi Holopainen combined for a 7-5 win over SU's Michelle Lui and Madison Maloney.
The Redhawks tied the match as Lui downed Middel at No. 1 singles 6-2, 6-3, but the Bobcats answered quickly with four straight points, including No. 4 singles where MSU junior Angelina Philippova clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Kali McCollister.
Posting singles victories for MSU were Chloe Goyette, Naomi Holopainen, Philippova and Jessica Brycki.
"I am happy with how our team finished off their first long weekend of dual match play," said MSU head coach Jon Reeves. "Three matches in three days in three different cities are always tough. They handled it brilliantly.
"We got off to a quick start in doubles," Reeves added. "Things got close in the middle and we did a good job of closing the matches out. Goyette and Brycki were amazing, controlling their matches from the start. The rest of our team had to fight through some tough times, which they handled quite well."
On Saturday, the Bobcats dropped a hard-fought 5-2 decision to regional power and Pac-12 foe Washington State in Pullman.
The Cougars got on the board first winning at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles. MSU was leading at No. 1 doubles 5-4 when WSU captured the point. Goyette, a freshman, evened the match at 1-1 with a dominating straight set win over Barbora Michalkova 6-2, 6-1. Washington State recaptured the lead with a win at No. 1 singles, before Philippova tied the match at 2-2 with a 6-2, 6-3 decision over Lejla Colic. The Cougars closed out the match winning the final three contests.
"We were ready to compete against Washington State," Reeves said. "I'm proud of our overall effort. We had our opportunities to win the doubles point. We had the games on our rackets, the difference came down to a couple missed opportunities on deuce points.
"In singles, Goyette and Philippova competed like crazy and took care of business," Reeves added. "Our team is in a great place compared to one year ago. They are all excited to go back to work for a couple weeks until our next road trip."
