Montana State Spikers Face Formidable 2014 Slate
6/10/2014 11:47:00 AM | Women's Volleyball
Montana State will open its season at the Utah Tournament.
The 2014 edition of Montana State volleyball will face a formidable schedule that includes tournaments at Pac-12, SEC, Mountain West and West Coast Conference schools this fall. In addition, the Bobcats will face a newly formatted slate in Big Sky Conference action.
Montana State will open its season at the Utah Tournament. The Pac-12 Utes are one of three 2013 NCAA Tournament teams the Bobcats will play. Also at the Utah tourney will be NCAA participant New Mexico State, along with Missouri State.
The Bobcats will travel to the Inland Empire, Sept. 5-6, to compete in the Gonzaga Invitational, in Spokane, Washington. Joining MSU and the Zags will be Canisius and Grand Canyon. The following week, MSU will compete in the New Mexico Tournament, which will feature the Bobcats, Lobos, UC Irvine and Bethune Cookman.
MSU will conclude its preseason tournament schedule at SEC power Tennessee, Sept. 19-20 in Knoxville. The Bobcats will face the Lady Vols, Memphis and Austin Peay.
Montana State will open up Big Sky play at Idaho State on Sept. 25.
This fall, Big Sky volleyball will be split into two six-team divisions for the regular season. Squads will play each team in their division twice, each team in the other division once, creating 16 conference matches. The North Division will include Eastern Washington, Idaho, North Dakota, Montana, Montana State and Northern Colorado. Idaho State, Northern Arizona, Portland State, Sacramento State, Southern Utah, and Weber State will be in the South Division.
"I am really excited about the 2014 schedule," said MSU third-year head coach Kyle Weindel. "The Big Sky Conference is certainly as good as ever with the addition of Idaho. The schedule is highlighted by the University of Utah and the University of Tennessee, but we are also playing traditionally very good programs such as Memphis, UC Irvine, Missouri State and New Mexico outside of conference play. Like last year, this schedule will challenge our still young, but more experienced group of returners."
The Bobcats will open its home season with the annual Shake Shroyer match versus intra-state rival Montana on Sept. 27. The contest is also part of the annual Brawl of the Wild series.
