MSU squares off with upstart UND, former coach now at UNC
Eight days. Four matches. Montana State's 2014 men's tennis season pretty much boils down to the two-week home stretch, and the possibilities remain nearly endless.
"We know we're still playing for something important," said Bobcat coach Jared Burnham. "We could finish at or near the top, but we haven't wrapped anything up. This is an important two weeks."
The Bobcats host North Dakota at 10 am Saturday, squaring off with a UND squad that stands 2-6 in Big Sky play. Beginning Sunday, MSU plays three matches against teams contending in the league playoff chase. Northern Colorado enters weekend play (the Bears play at Montana on Saturday) with a 5-3 mark, just behind MSU. On Thursday the Bobcats square off against 4-3 Eastern Washington, also in Bozeman, before traveling to Missoula on Saturday for a showdown against the 5-1 Grizzlies.
"Every team we play in this stretch has a lot on the line," Burnham said. "Three very good teams are coming to Bozeman, and of course the Grizzlies are fighting for a championship."
Sunday's match against Northern Colorado holds a little extra juice, marking the return of Bears coach Mike Phillips to the school which he built into a Big Sky power. Phillips coached the Bobcats from 2001-12, leading MSU to three Big Sky crowns, a string of success unprecedented in school history. He recruited five of the six players expected to line up for the Cats.
