The Montana State volleyball team dropped a pair of matches to conclude play at the Morehead State Comfort Inn and Suites Invitational, Saturday afternoon. MSU dropped a 25-16, 25-22, 25-23 decision to Saint Louis, before suffering a 22-25, 26-24, 21-25, 25-23, 15-11 setback to Morehead State.
"We finally started playing more consistent and quite well on Saturday," said second-year MSU head coach Kyle Weindel. "Our demise in the sets we lost was our inconsistent play after point 20. Overall, I am still searching for more consistency and efficient play from start to finish. Our goal with this tough schedule is to find our identity and learn to play volleyball together. Our most difficult opponent at times is ourselves."
In its hard-fought five-set loss to the Eagles, Montana State (1-6) was paced by freshmen outside hitters Loni Kreun and Kennadie Clute, who posted 15 and 14 kills, respectively. Clute posted her fourth double-double of the season with 13 digs. Freshman setter Anna Sykora also registered a double-double with 50 assists and 13 digs.
Senior Megan Spofford continued her torrid early season play with eight kills and a team-high six blocks. Senior libero Nicole Baker added a team-high 23 digs.
Against Saint Louis, Clute again paced Montana State with 16 kills and nine digs, while Kreun added a team-best 12 digs.
Sophomore middle blocker Natalee Godfrey put together one of her best matches of the season with nine kills, while hitting .533 from the floor.
"It's been the tale of two teams," Weindel said. "In sets two and three (against Saint Louis) we played extremely well, but still came up short at the end. I was generally happy how this group played. This young team at times shows that it can play a high level. We will need to focus on sustainability in the weeks ahead."
For her efforts, Clute was named to her second straight all-tournament team.
The Bobcats will play at nationally ranked BYU in Provo on Tuesday night, before opening its home schedule against Gonzaga on Friday night in Shroyer Gym.
