Shot at first place next weekend on the line this week
Look at it as a semifinal match.
Montana State and Montana will each have a shot at league-leading Idaho State next weekend, with a shot at the Big Sky Conference men's tennis regular season title on the line for one of the two. Which team has the clearest path to a share of the title, though, will be decided in Bozeman on Sunday. Montana visits the Bobcat-Anderson Tennis Center to square off with the Bobcats at 11 am.
"It will be an important match," said MSU's first-year coach Jared Burnham, "and an intense match. This is the kind of thing you look forward to as a coach and a player, and I know our guys will be ready."
Montana set the stage for a matchup between a pair of 7-1 squads by winning at Eastern Washington on Friday. In addition to Idaho State and Sunday's competing squads, Sacramento State is also likely to follow Sunday's proceedings with itnerest. The Hornets have wrapped up their league season with a 9-1 mark, guaranteeing that if one of the Treasure State squads topples ISU it will also share the crown.
Montana is led by senior freshman Semion Branzburg, who stands 8-5 on the season. Junior Mikolaj Caruk stands 6-3, and has been a steady performer at No. 1 singles. Michael Facey is UM's only senior.
Diego Campos has been among the Big Sky's leaders in wins throughout the seaosn, and his 11-2 mark at No. 4 singles is the best in the conference. Niklas Brandes and Javie Martin-Morillas have formed a formidable duo atop the singles ladder, while MSU's lone senior, Prithiv Sivasubramaniam, jumped from No. 6 singles to No. 5 last week and responded with a huge win against Weber State.
After Sunday's match, MSU is off until the following Sunday, when it hosts Idaho State. Montana and the Bengals get together on Saturday.
