MSU victory sets up chance at Big Sky Championship share next weekend
Montana State's 5-2 victory over Montana in men's tennis on Sunday guarantees that the Bobcats have the opportunity to play for a share of the Big Sky Conference regular season title at home next weekend. But on Sunday, that didn't matter.
“I'm happy for our players,” said first-year Bobcat coach Jared Burnham after his team earned its first . “It's a great rivalry, but it was also an important match. Our team competed hard and stayed focused, and it was a good team win.”
Sunday's win raises MSU's record to 9-1 in Big Sky play, giving the Bobcats an opportunity to claim a share of the Big Sky Conference Championship next Sunday when MSU hosts league-leading Idaho State. The Bengals stand 8-0 entering next week, while Sacramento is in the clubhouse with a 9-1 mark. Montana falls to 7-2 with the loss.
After dropping the doubles point, Montana State roared out of the gates in singles play. The Bobcats jumped out to commanding leads on three of the four singles courts, but the team's steadiest performer, Diego Campos, fell behind 5-2 in the first set. But after Niklas Brandes, Javier Martin-Morillas and Markus Schleuter each won their first sets, Campos staged a remarkable comeback to win 7-6.
While Campos dropped game two 6-4, the other three Bobcats captured second-set wins. Schlueter topped Ethan Vaughn 6-4, 6-3, Martin-Morillas grabbed a 6-3, 7-5 win over Michael Facey, and Brandes earned a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles to put MSU ahead 3-1.
Before Campos could finish slugging out a three-set win over Semion Branzburg (7-6, 4-6, 7-6), freshman Harry James wrapped up a quick 6-1, 6-2 victory over Eric Braun to clinch the match for Montana State. The triumph was MSU's first over the Grizzlies since a non-league tilt in 2010.
“It was an exciting win,” Burnham said, “very intense. We'll enjoy this one, but the win sets us up for an important match next weekend.”
