MSU, UM square off in non-league tilt
The sprint of the Big Sky season is on the horizon, the gauntlet of national-caliber non-conference competition is in the past, and it's time for Mike Phillips to really find out about his final Bobcat tennis squad. Montana State hosts arch-rival Montana in a non-conference match Saturday at 10 am in the Anderson-Bobcat Tennis Center.
Saturday's matchup pits a Montana team sporting a gaudy 3-1 record that includes wins over a pair of nationally-ranked lower-division squads, Whitman and UC Santa Cruz, along with a non-conference win at Idaho State. No. one singles player Carl Kuschke is considered one of the Big Sky's top returning players.
“We're really excited for this match,” said MSU coach Mike Phillips. “The Grizzlies will be one of the top teams in the Big Sky this year, and it will be a tough match against a conference opponent. We have a great deal of respect for their team and coach (Kris) Nord. They always play hard and with a good, competitive attitude.”
The Bobcats carry a 2-5 record into Saturday's contest, but MSU has competed well against a number of strong outfits. MSU has lost matches to nationally-ranked BYU, Oregon and Boise State teams, along with wins over Portland State and Utah State. The Cats are led by one of the Big Sky's hottest players, freshman Niklas Brandes, winner of the last two Big Sky Player of the Week awards.
“Our guys are going into this weekend playing very well,” Phillips said. “They've gained a lot of confidence from competing against some outstanding teams, and are very excited to play at home.”
