Brandes continues hot play and several Bobcats perform well
Freshman Niklas Brandes continued his hot play on Friday but Montana State's men's tennis team couldn't overcome nationally-ranked Boise State in a 6-1 Broncos win at Boise.
Brandes, the reigning Big Sky Player of the Week, earned a thrilling 6-7 (9-7), 7-6 (7-5), 10-7 win over Boise's highly-regarded Scott Sears, and teamed with doubles partner Markus Schleuter for an 8-5 win over Garrett Patton and Filipp Pogostkin. In spite of a couple of close defeats, those stood as MSU's only wins against the 45th-ranked Broncos.
“I thought the guys competed very well again,” said MSU coach Mike Phillips, “and they fought hard. We've played excellent competition so far, and Boise State certainly falls into that category. We're gaining confidence as we go, and I'm proud of the guys for how hard they're working.”
Sears and Nathan Sereke topped Diego Campos and Alberto Fuentes 8-5 to give BSU the doubles point (Lander Jewett and Prithiv Sivasubramaniam also lost 8-5). Boise State rolled to wins at no. two and no. five singles (Patton topped Schleuter and Pogostkin defeated Javier Martin Marillas to push the Broncos to the verge of a victory. But while Brandes battled Sears, Sivasubramaniam played Aiden Reid to three sets before falling in the clinching decision.
With the team outcome decided, Jewett nonetheless forced a second-set tie-breaker before falling in two to Erk Sheldon, and finally Brandes earned MSU's lone singles victory with all three games decided in tie-breaker fashion.
