Bobcats Announce Candidates for Volleyball Coaching Vacancy

Three candidates for the head Montana State volleyball coaching vacancy have accepted offers for on-campus interviews, announced Bobcat Athletics Director Peter Fields. The three candidates are Hannah Long, head coach at Southwestern University, Todd Nelson, assistant coach at Denver University and Kyle Weindel, assistant coach at Ohio University.

The three candidates are Hannah Long, head coach at Southwestern University, Todd Nelson, assistant coach at Denver University and Kyle Weindel, assistant coach at Ohio University.
“We had an outstanding pool of applicants with a vast array of experience,” Fields said. “The volleyball committee spent countless hours conducting phone interviews and reference checks. In the end, these three individuals, all with outstanding credentials, moved to the top of the list and we look forward to having them on campus and in front of our many different constituencies.”
Long, a former two sport standout in volleyball and basketball at Portland State University, has served as head coach at Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas, since 2004. In eight seasons with the Pirates, Long has guided the program to a 255-56 overall mark and seven NCAA Division III tournament appearances. Last season, Southwestern was ranked as high as No. 6 in the nation.
A four-time Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Coach of the Year honoree, Long was named the 2009 American Volleyball Coaches Association South Region Coach of the Year. Under her direction, Southwestern student-athletes have garnered five AVCA All-America honors and two SCAC Player of the Year accolades.
A 2000 graduate of Portland State with a degree in mathematics and communication, Long earned her masters of science degree in educational administration from Texas A&M in 2004. As a student-athlete, she played at PSU from 1995-98 and was a Vikings team captain and an All-Big Sky Conference selection and academic honoree. She is the daughter of current San Diego State head football coach Rocky Long.
Nelson, who has been an assistant at Denver University since 2006 and who has served as interim head coach since November, played an instrumental role in the Pioneers 2007 and 2008 Western Division Sun Belt Conference titles. During his tenure at Denver, DU has notched a 109-82 overall mark and a 70-35 conference ledger. Nelson was the position coach for two AVCA All-Region honorees and coached ten All-Sun Belt Conference performers. The Pioneers also garnered AVCA/Molten Team Academic accolades from 2006-11.
Prior to DU, he spent five seasons at Marquette University where he helped lead the Golden Eagles to a runner-up finish in Conference-USA in 2004. At MU, Nelson oversaw all student-athlete recruiting efforts, which included three AVCA Honorable Mention All-Americans. In addition, he also served as an assistant coach at Indiana State (1999-02) and the University of Minnesota-Duluth (1995-99).
Nelson earned his bachelor degrees in in elementary education and communication in 1998. At UMD, he was a player and coach with the Bulldog's men's team from 1992-99.
Weindel has served as assistant coach at Ohio University since 2008 and has helped guide the Bobcats to three Mid-American Conference tournament titles and one MAC regular-season championship. During his time in Athens, Ohio University has notched a 95-39 overall mark and a 50-13 league ledger.
As OU's defensive coordinator, the Bobcats have been ranked in the top 10 in the nation in team defense and have been ranked as high as No. 1 in the country in blocking. Ohio student-athletes have garnered two regular-season MAC most valuable player honors; three MAC tournament MVP accolades; two AVCA All-America awards; and 14 All-MAC kudos. Prior to Ohio University, Weindel served one season as an assistant at Saint Louis University.
Weindel earned a bachelor of science degree in exercise physiology from Ball State in 2003. As a player with the Cardinals, he was a member of BSU's 2002 NCAA Final Four squad.
