MSU volleyball squad drops five-set heartbreaker
Montana State's attempt to snap its 39-match losing streak came up just short in a 22-25, 25-17, 25-18, 23-25, 15-10 loss Weber State, Friday night in Shroyer Gym.
“We played hard, and we fought hard,” said MSU second-year head coach Sara Schaub. “We are starting to put ourselves in position to win matches. Our kids believe they can compete against any team in the league, and eventually good things will come our way.”
Montana State (2-11, 0-4) opened the match winning the first set by virtue of out-hitting Weber State (3-12, 2-3) .194 to .030. After breaking away from a 6-all tie, the Bobcats never trailed the rest of the set, winning on a WSU attack error.
The second and third sets belonged to the Wildcats, as Weber State held a .375 to .155 advantage in hitting.
In the fourth set, the Bobcats scored the first point on a Taylor Faught service ace, and the Bobcats never relinquished the lead. MSU pushed the margin to 17-12 following a WSU attack error. Weber State rattled off a 7-2 run to tie the score at 19-all, but Montana State answered with three straight points, and won the stanza on a Kylie Edinger kill.
Weber State opened the final set staking an 8-4 advantage following a Montana State hitting error. WSU built its lead to 13-6 on a Jenna Leggat kill, and won the match on a Chelsea Bair winner.
“Both teams really did a nice job,” Schaub said. “It was a battle that featured some great rallies and defensive play.”
MSU was paced by Kyla Hendry with 12 kills, while Jodeen Rademacher and Taylar Barney chipped in ten, apiece. MSU's freshmen duo of Barney and Edinger combined for 14 blocks. Defensively, the Bobcats were paced by Meghan Albiston with a match-high 16 digs.
Weber State was guided by Bair with 23 kills and 13 digs.
Montana State will host Idaho State, Saturday night in Shroyer Gym.
