Cats seek second-straight victory after defeating Northern Arizona in Bozeman last weekend
BOZEMAN, Mont. --- After an impressive 4-3 victory over Northern Arizona on April 3, the Montana State women's tennis team will look to add another tally to the win column when it hosts Montana in a rivalry matchup on Saturday.
The Bobcats, who have won two of their last three matches and three of their last five, will look to continue their strong momentum when the Grizzlies come to Bozeman on Saturday. The match is set to begin at 10 a.m., with live results located on msubobcats.com.
"Tomorrow is another great opportunity for us," Montana State head coach Hailey Barrett said. "We've had a productive week of practice, and we're excited to leave it all out there against the Griz. It's always fun to play in front of our home crowd, and we're excited to be in Bozeman again this weekend."
Montana State heads into its penultimate match of the regular season seeking its second win in as many matches after defeating Northern Arizona, 4-3, on April 3. The Bobcats earned the doubles point thanks to victories by Angel Bean and Nia Gelashvili on court two and Lola Bean and Kavya Khirwar on court three, respectively, and extended their lead to 2-0 thanks to Angel Bean's 6-1, 6-0 win in straight sets on court two. After Northern Arizona took three-straight points in singles to take the lead, 3-2, the Cats battled back to earn the crucial victory as Kavya Khirwar posted a 6-0, 6-1 win on court six and Lola Bean providing the match-clinching point with a 6-3, 6-4 win on court five.
At 6-10 on the season and 2-4 in Big Sky play, Saturday's match is critical for the Bobcats in improving their chances at clinching a spot in the Big Sky Women's Tennis Championships. Montana State sits just outside the top six in the Big Sky standings in seventh place, with Portland State holding a 2-3 conference record to maintain the final qualifying spot in the standings as of Friday morning.
The Griz enter Saturday's match with a 2-14 overall record and an 0-6 record in the Big Sky. Montana earned its last victory on Feb. 21 against Lewis-Clark State, posting a 6-1 win over the Warriors. The Grizzlies' other victory came on Feb. 6 against South Dakota, with the Griz earning a 5-2 win over the Coyotes in Sioux Falls, S.D. The Cats and Griz both have two regular-season matches remaining, with both teams hosting Weber State to conclude their respective schedules following Saturday's dual match in Bozeman.
The Bobcats' final regular-season match against the Wildcats will take place at the Bobcat-Anderson Tennis Center on Sunday, April 19. First serve is set for 10 a.m.
