Greeny, Bobcats hold individual and team leads with 18 holes to play
IOWA CITY, Iowa --- Lauren Greeny added another piece of history to Montana State's young season on Monday, carding the second-lowest round in program history while breaking the Finkbine Golf Course record for low round in a women's tournament on day one of the Diane Thomason Invitational.
Greeny opened the day with an 8-under 64 in the first round to shatter the course record, sinking nine birdies and just one bogey to set the tone for a strong day one for the Bobcats. Through 36 holes of play, Greeny holds the individual lead at 5-under 139 while the Cats are in first place as a team at 17-over 593, posting rounds of 293 and 300.
"What an incredible round on a tough course," head coach Brittany Basye said. "She was hitting fairways, greens, and making great putts. Just an all-around great round that happened on a great course. We have some work to finish up tomorrow, we need everyone tomorrow. We will keep to our game plan and play hard!"
Greeny leads a group of three Bobcats in the top 20 on the individual leaderboard, including two in the top 10. Maddie Montoya finished day one in a tie for sixth place, posting a 4-over 148, and Ashleigh Wilson is in a three-way tie for 17th with her 152. Norah Seidl sits in a tie for 39th with a 36-hole score of 156, and Eva Heinz holds a share of 48th with a 158. With a six-stroke lead on the team and individual leaderboards, Montana State is in prime shape to fight for the team title while Greeny will look to earn medalist honors for the fourth time in her career.
Greeny made an immediate impact to start the day, sinking consecutive birdies on holes 2 and 3 to open the first round. After carding a birdie on hole 4, she sunk four-straight pars followed by three-consecutive birdies to sit at 4-under-par through 10 holes. She then posted five more birdies on the back nine before sinking a par on hole 1 to wrap up her historic round of 64 at 8-under-par.
Montoya added an even-par 72 to count her morning round for the Cats, shooting par on all 18 holes to provide consistency for Montana State. The Bobcats also counted rounds of 77 from Seidl and 80 from Heinz to finish round one with a three-stroke team lead at 5-over 293.
That lead grew to six strokes in the second round as the Bobcats posted a 300 in the afternoon. Wilson posted a 71 to lead the team, using three birdies in her first four holes along with another on hole 12 to post MSU's third par-or-better round of the day. Montana State also counted a 75 from Greeny, a 76 from Montoya, and a 78 from Heinz to set itself up for a chance for its second victory in four weeks when the Cats return to the course on Tuesday.
Montana State's 36-hole score of 593 places the Bobcats ahead of Iowa (599) and Missouri State (601) in the race for the team title while South Dakota (602) and Southern Miss (605) sit close behind to round out the top-five teams through two rounds of competition.
Greeny (139) holds a six-stroke advantage over South Dakota's Ella Greenberg and Omaha's Katie Ruge (145) on the individual leaderboard while Southern Miss' Louise Cuyvers and Missouri State's Jiayi Zhang (146) also sit in the top five in a tie for fourth.
Montana State will tee off with Iowa and Missouri State from holes 1 through 3 on Tuesday, with the final round set to begin in a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m. MT. Live scoring is available at scoreboard.clippd.com.
