MSU set to compete in fourth tournament in four weeks
BOZEMAN, Mont. --- The Montana State women's golf team traveled to Iowa City, Iowa to compete in the Diane Thomason Invitational, which is set to begin on Monday.
The 54-hole Diane Thomason Invitational, hosted by the University of Iowa, will begin with a 7:30 a.m. MT shotgun start and consist of 36 holes on Monday. The Bobcats will then return to Finkbine Golf Course at 7:30 a.m. for the final 18 holes on Tuesday. The course is set at par 72 and 6,437 yards.
"We're excited about going back to Iowa to compete," Montana State head coach Brittany Basye said. "The field is different from what we are used to, so we love the opportunity to compete against some new teams. We had a good finish last year as a team and, of course, with Becca [Tschetter] getting the win, we want to obviously play hard and play well."
Montana State joins 15 other teams in Iowa City to wrap up its stint of four tournaments in four weeks to open the season. Of those teams, North Dakota State is the lone squad the Bobcats have faced this season. Other teams competing at Finkbine Golf Course include Bradley, Bowling Green, Creighton, Drake, Iowa, Missouri State, Northern Illinois, Northern Iowa, Omaha, South Dakota, Southern Illinois, Southern Miss, St. Thomas, and Western Michigan.
The Bobcats will look to continue their streak of three top-five team finishes to open the season when they take the course on Monday. Montana State most recently competed at the Kalispel Invitational in Spokane, Wash., last Monday and Tuesday, finishing third as a team with an 886. The Bobcats carded rounds of 295-298-293 to earn their second-straight top-three result following their home victory at the Yellowstone Intercollegiate two weeks ago.
Norah Seidl led the Bobcats individually in Spokane, carding a 2-over 218 to tie for eighth. The junior improved in each round, posting a 75, 74, and team-best 69 to pace the Cats in the Eastern Washington-hosted tournament. Freshmen Ashleigh Wilson (11th) and Sailor Graham (T-16th) also posted top-20 finishes, carding 54-hole scores of 220 and 222, respectively, with Wilson competing individually and Graham contributing to MSU's team score.
Montana State will travel five golfers to Iowa, competing with the same squad from its first two tournaments to open the year. Eva Heinz, Seidl, Lauren Greeny, Wilson, and Maddie Montoya are each set for their fourth tournament of the year, with Wilson returning to the team lineup after competing individually last week.
The Bobcats will look to replicate their success in last year's iteration of the tournament, where they finished third as a team behind Becca Tschetter's three-stroke individual victory in her Montana State debut. The graduate student posted a 54-hole score of 3-over 219 to collect medalist honors for the first time in her collegiate career. Greeny joined her in the top five, carding a 7-over 223 to finish fourth overall while Montoya and Heinz also competed at Finkbine Golf Course last season.
"Eva, Greeny, and Maddie have seen the course; Ashleigh and Norah have not," Basye said. "It's a great course, and the players are excited to see how we match up this year. The hospitality at Iowa was amazing. We are excited to be in the field again competing."
Montana State is paired with golfers from Iowa and North Dakota State on Monday and will tee off from holes 1 through 3 in a 7:30 a.m. shotgun start. Live scoring will be available at scoreboard.clippd.com.
