Competition level ramps up this weekend
BOZEMAN, Mont. (Sept. 25, 2025) – Montana State's fall men's tennis season takes a step up in competition level this weekend, when four Bobcats travel to Colorado Springs, Colorado, for the 2025 Bedford Cup in the Mountains. The three-day event at the U.S. Air Force Academy features teams from throughout the Rocky Mountains and Northwest.
"We're really excited to get back on the court and compete," said Montana State head coach Mateus Ceolin. "We've taken important strides and improved throughout the fall, and this is another opportunity for progress."
Ceolin said the level of competition at the Bedford Cup doesn't necessarily mean the top player are better than what the Cats have faced this fall, but there are more of them. "All the teams in our region and our conference have very good players at the top of their lineup," he said. "What we see against the top teams in the region and nationally is that there's not much difference between their top player or two and the bottom of their lineup. They have good talent and experience up and down their roster. That's what we'll see this weekend."
Freshmen Max Calaquian, David Ismanescu and Ethan Masselis are each entered in singles and doubles play. Sophomore Eddie Biss teams with Ismanescu in doubles, while Calaquian and Masselis form a pair.
"We've competed very well in singles play this fall," Ceolin said. "It hasn't always translated in the win-loss column to wins, but we've fought hard and gotten better." Calaquian and Ismanescu compete in the Falcon draw this weekend, with Masselis in the Raptor draw.
The Bobcats return to action after a week off from competition, which Ceolin called "very productive" and "really good timing." MSU competed at the Idaho State Invitational Sept. 19-21, winning just two of 11 matches but winning six of 24 sets. Sophomore Yassin Elaroussy advanced to the semifinals of his bracket, while junior Andre Stewart also won a match.
"It was a very positive weekend," Ceolin said. "Andre Stewart competed very well and took an important step forward. Our first-year players are learning every time out and this is going to be a really productive fall when it's all said and done."
