MSU faces strong regional field in Dar Walters Invite
BOZEMAN, Mont. (Sept. 11, 2025) – Less than a month in, Montana State's men's tennis team has already enjoyed a full fall semester.
While integrating three new freshmen into the team's eight man roster, the Bobcats participated in the program's first alumni reunion weekend, featuring over 150 former players, and competed in the Montana State Open. This weekend, though, things really ramp up.
The Bobcats open the fall intercollegiate season at the Dar Walters Classic in Boise, Idaho, hosted by Boise State. The three-day event which begins on Friday takes place primarily at the Appleton Tennis Center on the BSU campus, with some matches at Julia Davis Park and Fort Boise.
"This week we talked about what success would look like in Boise," said MSU's second-year head coach Mateus Ceolin. "We are looking forward to a great weekend of competition and 100% effort on every match that we will be playing. We are looking to approach the weekend in a very professional way and take care of the simple things, accomplish the smallest of the details in a very high-level way."
The Bobcats face a strong regional field this weekend, with players from Boise State, BYU, Idaho, Idaho State, Montana, Portland, Utah State and Weber State. The mini-dual format pairs two players from a school to compete as a 'team' against another pair in one doubles match and two singles matches. The team winning two of the three points advance in the bracket.
Ceolin's squad has accelerated toward the competition portion of the fall, and likes what his team accomplished recently. "It was another solid week of practice for the guys," he said. "We are keeping things simple and trying to come out each and every day and meet our standard of excellence. Each and every day our goal is to keep getting a little bit better. I feel this group has shown maturity in approaching practices in a professional manner".
The Bobcat Tennis Reunion served as a highlight of the early portion of the semester, Ceolin said. "It was incredible to see nearly 150 former players return to Bozeman. Connecting with the older generations of Bobcat tennis and feeling the pride they still carry for this program was very special."
The tournament also served as a tune-up for the fall schedule, which begins in Boise. "On the competition side, our guys got after it at the Montana State Open," Ceolin said. "Yassin (Elaroussy) captured the singles title, and Yassin and Eddie (Biss) teamed up to win the doubles championship. It was great to see the team competing again—it gave us a clear picture of where we are and what we need to get better moving forward."
Ceolin said all eight Bobcats travel to Boise this weekend. The roster begins with two-year starter Andre Stewart and returners Biss, Camille Chantron and Elaroussy. Returning redshirt Oumar Diallo also returns, joining new freshmen Elijah Calaquian, David Ismanescu and Ethan Masselis. Ceolin is looking forward to the team-building process.
"Supporting each other will be an important aspect of this weekend," he said. "We will be staying at an Air BnB together and this will be a great opportunity for the guys to spend a lot of time with each other and invest in the relationship with the group. A cherry on top would be finishing the weekend with a positive team record and having at least one player reach the tournament semi-finals. The competition will be tough, but the guys are excited and looking forward to the challenge."
