Montana State looking to sustain momentum from big performances at GCU Invitational with 54-hole tournament starting Friday at Sunbrook Golf Club
BOZEMAN, Mont. -- Montana State women's golf heads to St. George, Utah, this weekend to compete in the SUU Pizza Hut Lady Thunderbird, a 54-hole stroke play tournament starting Friday morning and continuing through Sunday.
The three-day tournament at Sunbrook Golf Club kicks off with 9 a.m. shotgun starts each day. Live scoring is available here.
Hosted by Southern Utah, the 12-team field includes Cal State Bakersfield, Eastern Washington, Idaho State, Weber State, Northern Arizona, Stetson, UC Riverside, Wyoming, Utah Tech, and Utah Valley.
"We're excited for a three-day tournament with 18 holes each day," Basye said. "The team is coming off a good week at GCU and a few steady hours of practice indoors. We will be focusing on our strengths on the course and getting our minds right each round. Each round is just another opportunity for us to get better individually and as a team. We are mid-season; we need to continue to focus on our strengths, build on our weaknesses, and continue to foster the healthy mindset--mental, physical and attitude."
Montana State is coming off top-three showings at three straight stroke play tournaments dating back to the fall, placing third at the Diane Thomason Invite (Oct .1), third at the Portland State Invitational (Oct. 15), and third at the GCU Invitational (Feb. 26).
The Cats turned in their best performance of the season two weeks ago in Phoenix, recording three straight rounds under 300 to place third with the fourth-lowest 54-hole tournament score in program history (877).
Leading the charge was Lauren Greeny, who tied her own school record on the final day with a 6-under par 66 to come from behind and win the tournament. Greeny, who was named Big Sky Golfer of the Week for her victory, birdied the last hole to force a playoff, where she secured the trophy on the third playoff hole.
Greeny shot a 6-under par 74-70-66 (210) to record the sixth-lowest 54-hole tournament score for an individual and earn her second win of the season. The junior from Pullman, Washington, is now one of five Cats in program history with multiple career wins.
Becca Tschetter tied for eighth to finish as the No. 2 Bobcat in Phoenix, her third straight top-ten finish that includes a tournament win at the Diane Thomason Invite in October.
Basye emphasized that how the Cats perform with their short games will be a key for success in Utah this weekend.
"This is a great field and great golf course, so we're excited to see how the players respond," Basye said.
