Bobcats to face strong competition at Tulsa-hosted tournament
BOZEMAN, Mont. --- The Montana State women's golf team caps off its historic fall season this Monday and Tuesday at the Route 66 Invitational Honoring Dale McNamara, competing against a slew of Power Four competition in a strong test for the Bobcats at Cedar Ridge Country Club in Broken Arrow, Okla.
The Dale McNamara Invitational will take place over the course of two days on the par-71, 6,181-yard Cedar Ridge Country Club course, with competition set to begin in a 7:30 a.m. MT shotgun start each day. The Bobcats will play 36 holes on Monday followed by 18 holes on Tuesday as MSU returns to action following a week off from team competition.
"This is by far the biggest tournament in our program's history, as far as playing with ranked teams goes," Montana State head coach Brittany Basye said. "To get the opportunity to practice and play with this caliber of teams tells us we are doing the right things within our program to get these invitations. With our program having success these last few years and our talent of players rising, we get opportunities like the tournament in Tulsa to compete. We are going to approach this like any other tournament, but the players know what this means for our program."
The Bobcats are set to join a group of 14 teams in Broken Arrow, including one ranked in the top 10 nationally and two others receiving votes in the most recent Mizuno Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) Coaches Poll, released on Sept. 26. No. 8 Arkansas highlights a trio of Southeastern Conference schools competing in the tournament, with Oklahoma (RV) and Alabama (RV) also set to take the course. BYU, Minnesota, Rutgers, and Wisconsin also join the field of Power Four schools, bringing that total to seven, while Cal Poly, Florida Gulf Coast, Georgia Southern, Montana State, Oral Roberts, Sam Houston, and Tulsa make up the remainder of the competitive field.
"This will be a good test for our players," Basye added. "We are excited about this tournament, and we will give it our best. I also want them to smile knowing they earned the opportunity to be playing with these top-ranked teams."
Three Bobcats made the trip to Missoula, Mont., on Oct. 6-7 to compete individually at the Sun Mountain Intercollegiate as the Cats took last week off from team competition following four-straight tournaments to open the season. Ashleigh Wilson earned a career-best runner-up finish at the Montana-hosted tournament at 1-over 217 to lead the Bobcats earning individual scores in Missoula. Sailor Graham tied for 15th with a 224, and Lauren Nau tallied a 228 to tie for 22nd.
Montana State last competed for a team score at the Diane Thomason Invitational on Sept. 29-30, highlighted by a medalist performance by Lauren Greeny. The Bobcats posted a score of 894 (293-300-301) to record their third-consecutive top-three team result while Greeny earned her fourth career win with a 5-under 211 performance. Greeny set records for Finkbine Golf Course's women's tournament low round and the Diane Thomason Invitational's all-time low-54 hole score en route to earning her fourth career Big Sky Conference Golfer of the Week honor. Maddie Montoya (T-8th) also posted a top-10 result with a 221 to pace Montana State, which has finished in the top five of each tournament in which it has competed as a team this season.
Greeny is set to lead the Bobcats' lineup in Broken Arrow, with Eva Heinz, Montoya, Norah Seidl, and Graham occupying the remaining four spots in Montana State's lineup on Monday. Greeny, Heinz, Montoya, and Seidl are each set for their fifth team appearance of the fall while Graham enters the lineup for the second time this season.
Monday will mark the Bobcats' first time competing in the Dale McNamara Invitational, which is set for its 11thiteration since its inception in 2010. Seidl, a Tulsa transfer, will be making her third appearance at the invitational after competing in the tournament during each of the last two seasons.
Montana State is paired with golfers from Tulsa and Wisconsin to open the tournament on Monday and will tee off from holes 1 through 3 in a 7:30 a.m. shotgun start. Live scoring will be available at scoreboard.clippd.com.
