Seeding at stake when rivals square off
BOZEMAN, Montana – Montana State closes the men's tennis regular season on Sunday, when the Bobcats host in-state rival Montana at the Bobcat-Anderson Tennis Center. Doubles play begins at 11 am.
Both teams have qualified for the Big Sky Conference Tournament, which begins April 25 in Phoenix, but seeding is at stake. Montana State stands 3-4 in the Big Sky, and will finish either fifth or sixth after Idaho was eliminated from the tourney with its loss at NAU on Saturday. The 4-3 Grizzlies could finish seeded anywhere from third to sixth. Sacramento State and NAU shared the league regular season crown with 7-1 records, and NAU owns the head-to-head tie-breaker.
But that is secondary to Sunday's rivalry showdown between Montana State (8-11 overall) and the Grizzlies (14-8). Sophomore Tom Bittner leads UM with a 15-2 record, including 6-1 at No. 1, while his classmate Baltazar Wiger-Nordas, playing recently at No. 2 singles, is 11-9 on the season. Montana's middle and lower ladder spots feature considerable experience. Seniors Guillermo Martin (No. 4, 7-6 overall) and Moritz Stoeger (No. 5, 14-8) are flanked by juniors Fernando Perez (No. 3, 10-8) and Chris Zhang (No. 6, 9-8).
Grad student Andras Necz leads the Bobcats with a 9-7 record, compiled primarily at No. 3 singles. Sophomore Max Relic, who holds down the top ladder spot, is 8-7 on the season. Each of the team's other positions are held down by freshmen. Dario Ciobotaru is 10-9 at No. 2, Rayen Hermassi is 8-9 at No. 4, Andre Stewart is 8-11 at No. 5, and Kanika Jayathilake is 8-6 at No. 6.
Play begins at 11 am Sunday at the Bobcat-Anderson Tennis Center. Admission is free.
