“It’s been real fun to see Marta and Hudson grow on the court,” Woodburn said. “Their confidence is just booming, and they are executing their points so well. They have just been dominating evert\y time they step on the court."
Missing three players from its normal match day ladder Montana State head women's tennis coach Suzie Woodburn used her depth en route to a 4-3 victory over New Mexico State on Sunday afternoon in the Bobcat-Anderson Tennis Center, stretching MSU's winning streak to four matches.
Despite being without the services of Andrea Cuquerella, Felicia Jayasaputra and Angel Bean, Montana State (10-4) went deep into its roster as seldom used singles players Hudson Hawkins and Mia Ljubas successfully helped fill the void.
Montana State won the first doubles match of the contest as its top duo of Marta Garcia-Reboredo and Hawkins posted their third straight victory with a 6-2 decision over Dora Kurdi and Anna Pinaieva. Garcia-Reboredo and Hawkins have won six of their last seven matches at No. 1 doubles. New Mexico State (3-10) captured wins at Nos. 2 and 3 to claim the first point.
"It's been real fun to see Marta and Hudson grow on the court," Woodburn said. "Their confidence is just booming, and they are executing their points so well. They have just been dominating evert\y time they step on the court.
"We had opportunities to win the doubles point," Woodburn added. "We need to just keep trusting ourselves in the big moments and executing the deuce points, but I am proud of our Nos. 2 and 3 teams for stepping in with new partners. Some of them just had a few practices with each other, and they competed."
Garcia-Reboredo quickly tied the match dispatching Natsuki Nishimura 6-1, 6-1 at the top singles spot for her seventh consecutive victory. Jazmin Lerman followed with a straight set 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 4, giving the Bobcats a 2-1 advantage.
New Mexico State grabbed the momentum from the Bobcats with wins at Nos. 2 and 3 giving the Aggies a 3-2 cushion setting up the final points to be decided at Nos. 5 and 6 singles.
"It was great to have the upperclassmen set the tone for singles, especially for Jazmin," Woodburn stated. "She went out there and competed very well, and Marta took care of business. And then all the newbies came in and fought super hard."
Ljubas used a big serve to defeat Whitney Moon 6-3, 6-3 at No. 6, before Hawkins, a freshman from Las Vegas, held off a late charging Kurdi to post a 6-3, 7-6(2) victory clinching the match for MSU.
"I'm so proud of Hudson and Mia," Woodburn said. "They just stepped in there and they did it. Our team is so deep that whoever we put in is going to get the job done. For them to have those big moments and to embrace the pressure is a privilege."
MSU plays at Idaho State on March 29 in Pocatello.
