Scarlet Weidig earns runner-up honors with program record 205, Cats secure top-five result amongst talented tournament field with program record 10-under-par 854
PHOENIX – The Montana State golf team wrapped up a record-breaking week in Phoenix on Wednesday, shooting a 9-under-par 279 in their final round to tie for fourth at the GCU Invitational, held at the GCU Golf Course.
Scarlet Weidig capped off a tremendous two days with a runner-up finish individually, breaking her own program record for low 54-hole tournament score with a dazzling 11-under-par 205 (67-67-71). The score bests her previous mark of 207, which she recorded in September while winning the Big Sky '54 for IX' tournament in Utah.
One day after tying the MSU record for low round twice in one day by carding a pair of 67's on Tuesday, the redshirt junior from Belen Heredia, Costa Rica, shot a 1-under-par 71 while pushing eventual tournament champion Emma Bunch from New Mexico State the entire afternoon.
As a team, the Bobcats obliterated the program record for 54-hole tournament score by 15 strokes thanks to a final tally of 854—a remarkable ten strokes under par. Montana State has now met or eclipsed what had been the program record coming into the season (882) on four occasions.
"I'm very thrilled and proud of these girls," head coach Brittany Basye said. "Scarlet getting second place is great. Obviously she wanted to win but we'll take second place any day. Probably the biggest thing that I'm most proud of is how we finished—that's been our theme the last couple years, is we have to finish—and today, they finished and then put the pedal down. Super happy with that. We talked coming in about how good the field is—we're talking about teams that play outside every day. We're playing indoors. People might not understand how big of a deal that is, but these girls can play. They're gritty and they're athletes."

Lauren Greeny shot a 5-under-par 67 on Wednesday, the fourth time the sophomore has tied the program record for low individual round. The native of Pullman, Washington, finished tied for 22nd overall with a 216 (69-80-67). Greeny's front nine on Wednesday included three birdies and an eagle as she bounced back from a tough second round, and that momentum carried over into the back nine as she finished with a 67 for the third time this season.
The runner-up finish marks the fifth top-five result for Weidig as a Bobcat, tying her for fourth all-time with Kylie Peterson and Kelly Hooper.
Eva Heinz continued her consistent stretch of play with a 4-under-par 68 on Wednesday, tying her career-best and tied for the tenth-best round in school history. The freshman from Goodyear, Arizona, tied for 19th overall in the field of 119, using a bogey-free final round that featured four birdies to vault into the top-20 for the first time in her Bobcat career.
Maddie Montoya (T79th) and Hannah Boraas (T96th) also contributed on Wednesday, with Boraas, a freshman, shooting a 1-over-par 73 to aid in the Cats breaking the program record.
The nine-under-par 279 for the Cats is the third-best team round in school history, behind only a pair of rounds for the team in September at the Big Sky '54 for IX' and Timpanogos Collegiate Classic.
New Mexico State took the team title (-18), with Grand Canyon (-13) and Cal State Fullerton (-12) rounding out the top three. Montana State (-10) tied with UC Riverside for fourth. The Bobcats finished 25 strokes clear of the next closest Big Sky competitor, Northern Arizona.
"We accomplished another thing that we wanted to check off the list, and we're going to keep checking items off that list," Basye said. "We've got lots of work left. Conference isn't until the third week of April, but we're lined up and we're going to keep lining up."

Montana State will return to Arizona for the Red Rocks Invitational in Sedona on March 16-17. The two-day tournament hosted by Northern Arizona will be held at Oakcreek Country Club.
