Scarlet Weidig matches program record for low round in consecutive rounds on Tuesday, carding a 67 twice to pace Bobcats in Phoenix
PHOENIX – Scarlet Weidig added another accomplishment to her illustrious Bobcat career on Tuesday, carding back-to-back rounds of 67 to pace the Montana State golf team on Tuesday at the GCU Invitational in Phoenix.
Weidig, a redshirt junior from Belen Heredia, Costa Rica, recorded seven birdies on the way to a program record-tying 5-under-par 67 in the morning, then backed that up with a 5-under-par 67 in the second round in the afternoon.
Prior to this season, a 67 had been recorded just three times in program history. This year alone, Lauren Greeny has carded a 67 twice and Weidig has now done it three times—the last two coming in consecutive rounds on Tuesday.
Entering Wednesday's final round, Weidig is tied for first atop the individual leaderboard at 10-under-par with New Mexico State's Emma Bunch after both shot 134 through 36 holes. UC Riverside's Vanessa Betancourt is in third at 7-under-par.
Across 36 holes, Weidig finished with 13 birdies and just three bogeys. Across the back nine in the second round, the veteran had four birdies and shot a 32.
"It's incredible," head coach Brittany Basye said. "She's just been working really hard on the mental part of her game, and if she misses something or something doesn't go her way, she drops it and she gets to the next shot because she knows she can recover. When you're on and you're making putts—you're in the zone. You're going."
Led by Weidig, Montana State sits in third out of 21 teams entering Wednesday's final 18 holes, shooting 595 (285-290) to sit at 1-under-par. Full results from the first two rounds can be viewed here.
The round of 285 in the morning is the third-best team round in school history, and the third time this season that the Bobcats have recorded a round that would have broken the existing school record prior to the fall.
New Mexico State leads the field with a 17-under-par 559, while UC Riverside is in second at 9-under-par with a 567.
"Obviously the goal of each golf tournament is to be in the final round in the last pairing—so we accomplished that goal," Basye said. "We got Greeny back in the lineup. Shooting a 69 is pretty amazing coming out of the winter and coming off a knee surgery, so really proud of that. Obviously Scarlet is on fire and in the zone. She's really working hard on her mental game and it's paying off. Eva is consistent, shooting even the first round, got Maddie with an even-par round on the second round, and Hannah [Boraas] brought it back to a 76."
Lauren Greeny, a sophomore from Pullman, Washington, shot 69 in her first round of the spring, the fourth time this season she's carded a round below 70.
Eva Heinz, a freshman from Goodyear, Arizona, is tied for 42nd through two rounds at 147 (72-75).
Maddie Montoya, a sophomore from Boise, Idaho, is tied 56th at 149 (77-72).
"We've got some work to do tomorrow, but we just need to stay cool, keep our composure, and we need to literally focus on every shot," Basye said. "36 holes is a hard day, but everybody is out here doing the same thing so we need to just finish it and play the way we know how to play."
