Two-day tournament in Sedona, Arizona, will feature seven Big Sky teams at Oakcreek Country Club
BOZEMAN, Montana – Montana State continues a long stretch of golf in Arizona this weekend when the Bobcats play at the Red Rocks Invitational in Sedona on Saturday and Sunday.
The 20-team field includes seven of the 10 Big Sky women's golf programs, convening at the Oakcreek Country Club for the 54 hole event that begins with 36 holes on Saturday. Play begins at 8:15 am both Saturday and Sunday.
MSU coach Brittany Basye said challenging elevation changes, including greens, and numerous doglegs push accuracy off the tee box rises to the top of the priority list this weekend. "This is the type of golf course that you have to hit your spots, you can't just bombs away, so the last couple weeks we've worked on hitting landing spots. We'll have an advantage if we hit our fairways and give ourselves shorter spots."
Locking in on lessons from the practice course is important, Basye said. "There are a couple of holes that we can take advantage of if we play them correctly. We need to stick to our game plans. Each tournament we need to focus on what we've worked on in practice and not diverge from that. It's working on shots that are more creative, and knocking down our putts."
In addition to the Bobcats, Northern Arizona hosts Eastern Washington, Idaho, Montana, Northern Colorado and Weber State from the Big Sky this weekend. That heightens Basye's urgency to play well. "Like we've talked to the team about at different times this spring, we need a good finish here and we need to compete because there are some teas from our conference, and obviously NAU is hosting."
After this weekend's tournament the Bobcats take a week away from competition then close the season three tournaments in 14 days in the Phoenix area. Live scoring for the Red Rocks Invitational can be found here.
