“We battled but came up short,” said MSU head coach Suzie Woodburn.
Portland State's Maddie Egan posted a 6-7(6), 6-2, 7-5 come from behind victory over Montana State's Felicia Jayasaputra at No. 6 singles to give the Vikings a 4-3 win in the Big Sky Conference opener for both squads at the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon.
Portland State (3-3, 1-0) captured the pivotal doubles point opening the contest with wins at Nos. 2 and 3. Montana State's (5-3, 0-1) lone doubles win came at the top spot where the tandem of Marta Garcia-Reboredo and Hudson Hawkins notched a 6-2 decision over Capu Sanoner and Scarlett Perkins.
MSU quickly jumped to a 2-1 advantage following Garcia-Reboredo's 6-0, 6-4 win over Elizabeth Strongina at No. 1 and Paula Dougherty's 6-3, 6-4 victory over Nika Beukers. The Vikings grabbed wins at Nos. 3 and 5 on the ladder to regain a 3-2 lead, before Bobcat freshman Meg McCarty evened the match with a 6-2, 3-6, 7-5 victory at No. 3 singles over Makoto Ohara to put the spotlight on No. 6.
"We battled but came up short," said MSU head coach Suzie Woodburn. "It came down to the last match and unfortunately it didn't go our way. Ultimately, it came down to the doubles point. We've been working hard at doubles, but we didn't commit this afternoon. Our kids are fighters, and we will bounce back."
Montana State plays at Gonzaga on Friday, Feb. 23 at 3 p.m. (MT).
