MSU trio looks for continued improvement against tough competition
BOZEMAN, Montana – Three Montana State men's tennis players compete in the 2024 ITA Division I Men's Mountain Regional Championships in Las Vegas beginning Thursday, October 17.
Sophomore Andre Stewart and graduate transfers Dmitry Bezborodov and Harrison Janes represent the Bobcats at the regional championships, which features the top competition of the fall season. "It's a tournament with really strong competition," said first-year coach Mateus Ceolin. "I'm looking forward to seeing if we've gotten better, where' we've gotten better, and where we need to keep working."
Bezborodov enters ITA Regionals with a 5-3 singles record. Stewart carries a 3-4 mark into the weekend. Janes is 1-5 this fall. The team competed in tournaments at Boise State and Air Force, spending the past two weeks in practice. "These three guys have been working extremely hard this fall," Ceolin said. "They've been buying into the standard of excellence we're trying to establish."
Ceolin said each player focuses on individual skills throughout the fall, but during his return to Montana State after playing for the Cats and serving as an assistant he said he is introducing the principles on which he's building the program. "It's playing physical on the corners, playing strong, knowing what you're going to do on serve-plus-one, return-plus-one. As a team we want to have a plan on every ball, chase down every ball."
Ceolin said he's pleased with the arc of improvement and "technical development we've seen. In all honesty, I'm really happy with the work the guys are doing in the weight room and in conditioning. Every day they've been leaving everything on the court."
He said this weekend is another step toward establishing his program's foundation. "I want them to be focused at all times," he said, "whether it's a tournament or practice. The guys need to understand that everything we do has to be full speed. Every tournament we're working hard and playing to the most of your effort. I truly believe that makes the healthy culture."
Weekend schedule results is available at ITA Tennis and on msubobcats.com and MSU men's tennis social media accounts.
