Bobcat Men's Tennis Team Opens 2024 Season in Bozeman on Friday

MSU hosts UC Riverside at 1 pm Friday in Bobcat-Anderson Tennis Center
BOZEMAN, Montana – Montana State's 2024 men's tennis season arrives Friday when the Bobcats host UC Riverside at 1 pm in the Bobcat-Anderson Tennis Center.
After a 2023 season that lasted only two matches before being undone by an unprecedented wave of injuries, the excitement and uncertainty accompanying a new campaign are more intense for second-year head coach Rob Bareford. "We're all looking forward to the season," he said, "and to playing matches as a team."
Since last spring Bareford rebuilt a roster that now features nine Bobcats, including three returners. Senior Jacob Huppin, in his fourth varsity season, and sophomores Adrian Daniel and Max Relic return from last year's squad. Two others, grad transfer Andras Necz and freshman Dario Ciobotaru, played for MSU in the fall. "Jacob got off to a good start last season, and we had a number of guys play well in the fall," Bareford said.
Bareford welcomes junior Gray Voelzke and freshman Rayen Hermassi, Kanika Jayathilake, and Andre Stewart at the beginning of this semester. That gives him four newcomers to integrate into the squad as the new season dawns. "I've added new players in January, although not as many as four," he said. "It's a process but I'm excited to get everyone competing and working together."
Necz enjoyed a productive career at UC Davis, and the experience he brings as a grad transfer could serve as an anchor among the newcomers. Each of the freshmen bring talent to the mix.
After Friday's opener, the Bobcats host Seattle on Sunday at 1 pm at the Bobcat-Anderson Tennis Center.
