MSU wraps up competitive tournament with solid final rounds on Tuesday at Tacoma Country and Golf Club
LAKEWOOD, Washington – Montana State women's golf closed out play at the Pat Lesser Harbottle Invitational on Tuesday, tying for tenth place after two competitive days at Tacoma Country and Golf Club in Lakewood, Washington.
Montana State finished their run at the 22-team tournament with a 54-hole score of 889 (287-308-294), closing out Tuesday at 25-over par. Full results can be viewed here.
"Today was better, it's always good to end on good rounds," head coach Brittany Basye said. "They battled in tough conditions this week, and I'm excited about the direction the team is going. We will learn from our good and bad rounds. It's exciting to see the level these ladies are playing. We are playing with teams we haven't before, and that's exciting."
The Bobcats finished first among participating Big Sky teams, beating out Weber State (13th), Idaho (17th), Portland State (20th), and Eastern Washington (21st).
Grand Canyon surged towards the team title on Tuesday with an 8-under-par 280 final round, narrowly clearing runner-up Nevada.
Santa Clara, UC Irvine, Seattle U, and Gonzaga rounded out the top six.
The trip marked the Bobcats' first serious duel with Mother Nature this fall, as constant rain on Monday made for challenging course management.
Despite that, Montana State still tied for fourth in the field in birdies (36), and, alongside tournament champion Grand Canyon, co-led for best stroke average on par 3's, averaging 3.02 on the shorter holes.
Scarlet Weidig finished as the top Bobcat individually, tying for 24th with a 54-hole score of 221 (73-70-78). The 70 she shot in Monday's second round was the fifth time in three tournaments she recorded a round below par.
Maddie Montoya finished tied for 36th with a mark of 223 (73-77-73), and Eva Heinz ended close behind at 224 (69-80-75), tying for 43rd.
Montoya has now carded a 74 or below in seven of eight rounds this season.
Lauren Greeny and Hannah Boraas both closed out their tournaments on high notes, finishing with rounds of 72 and 74, respectively, and tying for 59th.
Belle Brezovski, competing individually, tied for 97th with a 235 (77-82-76).
In a tie for tenth with South Dakota and Hawaii, Montana State jumped up nine spots in the team standings from their finish at last season's event in Lakewood.
"Next up is Spokane—good playing there with Scarlet winning last year," Basye said. "The players are getting better each tournament and we are learning as well. It takes all of us to be successful, they all need to contribute, and they are."
Up Next
Montana State will continue their fall sprint with their third tournament in three weeks, traveling to Spokane, Washington, to compete in the Eagle Invitational, held at Indian Canyon Golf Course.
Last season, Scarlet Weidig took home the individual title there to help lead the Bobcats to a runner-up team finish.
Competition at the event, hosted by Eastern Washington, begins Monday, October 9, and continues through Tuesday, October 10.
